The apartment that time forgot It's a real shame that they don't show the kitchen and bath as from the description I understand it's from the thirties. What a combo, me wants! I'm off to play the lotto, since despite it being cheap it's way too pricey for me.
the last photo is of a stone mangle, we have one of those in the basement here as well. Total antique!

Bloody gorgeous.

While I'm at it, a fine example of 1950's practical funkis near the largest park-area in Stockholm. The first thing idiots will do is tear down the wall between the kitchen area and dining area "to create space". Stupid people! Don't do that! Nobody wants to look at messy dishes when eating!

I agree arse_hat, the floor in the dark dining room makes me go gaga. You don't see "stjärnparkett" often.

I shouldn't check the sale listings. I'm in lust with that old apartment now. I'd move in without touching it at all (because hola, I could not afford even new wallpaper if I did, it's way beyond my wallet), and _still_ love it, adore it, actually probably love it more. Badly renovated gems break my heart. I want to save this gem!

I really hate "open concept". I love to cook but I want the kitchen to be away from the rest of our lives. "I want to save this gem!" It is move-in perfect.

Thank god, I thought it was just me. There's a disease going on in sweden where everyone knocks down the wall to the kitchen and has open plan. Everyone in my building seem to be doing it as demonstrated here by our upstairs neighbour, which turns a "2 rooms and a kitchen" apartment into a "1 room and a really large kitchen" apartment. People in a similar building across the street who have spent a lot of time renovating every detail now have to move as they threw away a possible bedroom when they made the kitchen size massive. (The bedroom shows two childrens cribs, which I guess is the reason they're giving up a place they renovated to their tastes in the current all apartments are almost free climate)

(also I can't stand it when they photograph fruit baskets for these things. I AM NOT BUYING THE FRUIT BASKET!)
posted by dabitch 02 March | 04:08
I love this too.... maybe if we get a few of us in together!

I've been browsing idly by, am looking at buying soonish, and the ones I can afford are grimly small. Yikes.

That fruit basket looks delicious! Sold!

Lots of my neighbors have done the open plan thing to their 19th century townhouse too. It would be impossible in our house since the back staircase is in between the kitchen and dining room.

Dang, that is a GORGEOUS apartment! It looks like something out of a movie... wow.

YES PLEASE

Movie is so true. I wanna build something that plays the theme tune to the Godfather every time you open the sliding doors and walk into that dark brown dining room.....

OK, I calculated that with 970 000 SEK in savings and loan at the current rates we'd end up with only 11000 in monthly loan and fees - that's totally doable if I get a roommate (and can magic wand up some savings). Who wants to be my roommate? The hood is really good as well, close to the subway.

Am I to understand that that medieval torture device--the stone mangle--is part of the common washing facilities? Freshly mangled sheets!
posted by steef 02 March | 08:41
Yep, it's in the basement where there's also a sauna, a gym and the washing machines and drying room. Good link !

Also, I know how to use them so if you front half the down-payment I promise to mangle all the sheets forääävar. (We have one in this basement as well but the room creeps me out so I never mangle here. Also, I learned to mangle with my gran who had the nasty habit of yelling "watch your hands!!" all the time even when I was nowhere near ever getting hurt, so I'm easily jumpy around stone mangles as if it's gonna yank my hand off at any given moment.)

Just looked at the 1950s apartment... that's a nice place too. It'd be fun to live in I think.

Wow, Dabitch. I want to go! I'll move to Stockholm simply for the awesome names everything has.

*runs to instantly learn Swedish*

What's also weird is how much Stockholm looks like anywhere else I've been. Can you do another post of Stockholm-related coolness? I want to know the interesting, secret places.
posted by Lipstick Thespian 02 March | 11:32
That place is incredible. Maybe if we all chipped in we could have a Metachat pied-à-terre in Stockholm. I've always wanted a pied-à-terre.
posted by elizard 02 March | 11:43
One of the things I loved about Stockholm are those charming furnace/chimney things in all the older houses.

Oh wow, just gorgeous.

But on your neighbour's floorplan, I must confess I sniggered at 'Kok' and 'Bad'. Sometimes I am still 12 in my head.

That is truly stunning. I hope it has preservation easements on it.

420 000 euro. I wish something like that would be that cheap here....
posted by jouke 02 March | 15:17
Magnificent, but not my cup of tea at all. I like open plan and clean lines and all that modern stuff.

My Swedish is kinda rusty - what's Jungfru-kammare? It looks like it could be the dining room (Mastsal?) and you could use the dining room as another bedroom (Sovrum?). Or using the living room (Vardagsrum?) as a bedroom and the Mastsal as the living room.
posted by deborah 02 March | 15:59
Maidens room - usually located behind or right next to the kitchen and much smaller than the "real" bedroom. In other words, perfect for kids. :) Sovrum = bedroom, Matsal = dining room and Vardagsrum = living room. Keep it up and you could sell apartments in Stockholm!

Stunning.

@Upstairs neighbour — is that white tile in the bedroom and livingroom? No, Gloss White [epoxy] painted wooden floor?? Whoa. Cool - needs some persian carpet or throw rugs... And, that red wallpaper with the gingham wingback chair? ouch. OUCH. I'm all for open kitchens however. If my super won't finish my floors, I may white epoxy these tired parquet floors too, down the hall only though... That'd be cool.

@Across the street — Is that a glass tile wall in the living room? WOW. A really interesting placement [by N/A standards] — I just don't think that couch is the right colour. Red or black, not.. is that grey or taupe next to the teak coffee table.

I think the tiled cabinet is too much for the loo though. They certainly went all the way with the detail, indeed. It seems a tad cold though. I love white, but, where's the colour, where's the art on the wall [is this up for sale so all art is down and it's been staged?] Yeah, that fruit basket, nah.

I do love the clean lines in the kitchen. Damn! Stunning.

@nifti 50's - that kitchen? You can't even swing a cat in there. My apartment kitchen is wider — that wall is coming down! Is that a half fridge I see? Oi. No way — that kitchen needs a redo.... heh-heh.

Love your interiors posts, dabitch. What an incredible difference from the N/A tastes.
