The Clash's Straight to Hell by Jakob Dylan and Elvis Costello [More:]Has anyone else been watching Elvis's show on Sundance? It's fun but it's a little jarring to watch the old angry young man be the charming talk show host.
That was pretty wicked. I like Jakob's voice a lot. I've read some pretty good reviews of his latest efforts.

Also, in reading Joe Strummer's bio, I was surprised at how many times Jakob popped up, as a big Clash fan, with a dad who had some pull!

This is really great, thanks for pointing it out. I wish it was better mixed for regular listening, but often live stuff is like that. Elvis really does have that vocal down though.

This is terrific -- thanks so much for posting it!

I've always thought "Straight to Hell" was one of the all-time great Clash tunes, but it seemed to be somewhat overlooked for years -- overshadowed by the two big hits off "Combat Rock," which itself was dismissed for a time by purists as being their big sellout record. It's cool to see this song getting its due more generally.

I noticed the Lily Allen cover in the "related links" section--it's interesting too.

Straight to Hell has always been one of my favorite Clash songs. I never realized that Combat Rock was looked down upon, or that this was an "overshadowed" song (though clearly I realize that Should I Stay and Rock the Casbah were mainstream hits). I guess that's one of the benefits of being a bit out of it in terms of music criticism and just the music conversation in general.

Or it could have just been the crowd I hung out with! ;)

I tortured my freshman roommates in college with Combat Rock many time when it came out. They were more into '70s Southern Fried Rock and Metal and couldn't understand why I wanted to listen to that damn new music.
