Wow. Just wow. I read her biography over and over when it came out in the late 80s.[More:]She already has a tree on the Avenue of Righteous Gentiles, I believe, as do all the other helpers. She's a great storyteller; the book also gives vivid descriptions of what happened, for example, during the Hunger Winter in Amsterdam, information that I didn't know before. Powerful, powerful stuff.
One. This is awesome. I had no idea she was still alive.

Two. This sentence bothers me: "Like the Franks, about 24,000 Dutch Jews went into hiding, of which 8,000 were hunted down or betrayed in exchange for a bounty."

It should read:

"Like the Franks, about 24,000 Dutch Jews went into hiding, of whom 8,000 were hunted down or betrayed in exchange for a bounty."

Good call, brina. Ick! And even better:

Even better: "Like the Franks, about 24,000 Dutch Jews went into hiding. Of those, 8,000 were hunted down or betrayed in exchange for a bounty."

Now I'll RTFA.

Good story. Wow, can't believe she's still alive either!

What the 'helpers' did was deeply inspiring - the bravery, when it would have been far safer to put blinders on and mind your own business.

I've always loved the sound of her name: Miep Gies. (Or at least, I've loved the way I assumed it sounds. I could be very wrong.)
