Oh that is lovely! I hadn't heard of it before. The photo of the red hearts in the snow was very striking.

In New England, in winter, you need all the bright red you can get. :)

Walking into downtown Portland this morning, I found myself wondering for the first time "Who the heck does this every year?"

I know it sounds crazy; how could I never have wondered before? But it was just... something that happens, a seasonal feature of Portland. In summer, we have mosquitos and sun; in winter, we have snow and ice; in February, we have heart flyers.

The Observatory was flying a Phantom-style heart flag this morning. I smiled all the way down Congress Street.

I used to work in Portland's Old Port, and it was great fun in the morning, seeing the hearts everywhere. Portland's pretty great.
