Hope me with my chocolate chip replacement surgery? I'm going to try this recipe today, but as I've whined about many times in the past, I can't get chocolate chips. My plan is to just melt the same amount of sweet dark chocolate (from a bar) and add to the other ingredients. That should be okay, right?
Oh, and in case you haven't read my earlier plaints, I've tried smashing, cutting, and processing chocolate bars to create make-do chips, and it doesn't work... or at least I'm not willing to invest the amount of effort that perhaps would make it work.

They're in this recipe for texture/flavor. You could drop them entirely or just put in 3/4 cm chunks. Don't melt it.

The recipe says "instead adding a handful of semisweet chocolate chips" and they're folded in. She wants the effect of semi-molten islands of chocolate among the zucchini bits.

if I could create 3/4 cm chunks, though, I could probably create smaller bits. I wonder if M&Ms would be icky? I don't think I want to leave it out entirely... 125 grams of serious chocolate would be quite a bit to leave out.

Yeah, don't melt it, put the chocolate in the fridge until it's really hard and then cut it into chunks using a large, sharp chef's knife. Or you could put it in a plastic bag and bash it with a rolling pin until it's smashed up. But melted chocolate would affect the texture.

M&Ms probably won't work, because the sugar coating on them would affect the chemical balance of the cake, and would also probably go really yucky during baking.

Could you melt the chocolate and make your chips on a sheet of waxed paper?

What about freezing the chocolate first, and then trying to shatter it with a hammer (in a plastic bag, of course.)

M7M's would work, but they're sweet. From the use of cocoa, it looks like they're trying to get a darker taste.

... or melt the chocolate and let it drip into ice cold water.

I was going to say what essexjan said -- Cut uniform chunks with a knife. Chocolate zucchini bread sounds delicious.

Thanks, kids! I've tried cutting with a knife before, and pieces fly everywhere... though I guess I could soften it a bit and try that... or else the freezing/plastic bag/hammer idea.

I wanted it to be quick and simple though. TREASURE YOUR CHOCCY CHIPS PEOPLE!

Anyway, I didn't make it today. In fact, my whole Valentine's day went kind of bust, because someone came in from out of town - and since V. Day is not really a thing here, they didn't think anything of it. I'm feeling kind of pouty, though. I bought salmon steaks and new potatoes and artichokes. And champagne. We'll have them tomorrow, but I was sort of happy about the idea of celebrating Valentine's a little bit for once. But no.
