This is maybe two miles from where I'm sitting now it's pretty surreal. I happened to see the governor's motorcade on my way to work. one of my coworkers was supposed to be on there- but she missed the plane last night.
The first thing I did when I saw the news this morning was to check on the map that it was nowhere near your home. I bet your co-worker was annoyed when she first missed the plane.
I'm sure she was, but she's happy now. The woman who sits next to me is scheduled on that flight for a week from today, too.
My mom didn't think to check the map... I woke up, before knowing what happened, to her calling and screaming "OH MY GOD HONEY THANK GOD YOU'RE OK!!!" into my phone.
I was sitting online last night when it happened. So very sad. Plane crashes suck.
Doesn't it always seem like plane incidents happen in spates? I know about confirmation bias and everything, but plane crashes are big news and you hear about them no matter what, especially if they happen in your own country or to its citizens. And it just seems as though there are long periods with none, and then a few in a row.
I was hoping to hear from you today, kellydamnit. I'm glad you're ok.
My family home was about 3 miles from there. I went to Clarence High School. Many of my high school friends still have family in Clarence, if they don't still live there themselves.
Unfortunately, that guy that they kept showing on CNN with the Sabres cap on, talking about his sister being on the plane? I was friends with him in high school. He was in my grade and in pretty much all my classes. I didn't know his sister, she was a good 6-8 years younger than us, but I remember even then he loved his sisters soooo much. Very family-oriented guy. My heart goes out to them and all the families that lost loved ones.
The really really weirdest thing? A regional vice president from my organization and her husband also died in a completely separate small plane crash outside of Houston yesterday. So I know (tangentially) two people killed in two separate plane crashes on the same day. WTF indeed.
It's been an odd day. I work in distribution, so I deal with both resellers and manufacturers, and they've all been calling all day to make sure everyone here is all right.
a few of my coworkers could see it from their homes. scary stuff.
It's just strange, you see stuff like this on the news all the time, but you never expect it in your backyard. especially if you live in a backwater like this.
Thanks for your concern, everyone. I promise, I'm ok. Transfer your worries to the poor people who lost family and friends. This is a small city, and I'd imagine most people flying into Buffalo on a friday are headed home, so there's a lot of "the cantor at my synogogue/ my kid's teacher's husband/ my mom's doctor" type of connections going on at my office today.
Hate when these things happen. There's something so massively random about them that is very unsettling. Glad you're OK, Kelly.
I grew up on the last street before the start/end of the runway, directly under the flight path for SeaTac. I mean, we could do visual inspections on the landing gear.*
Every day I expected one of those beast to fall out of the sky but oddly enough I never thought it might fall on me.
*I laugh when I see the whiners on the news complaining about jet noise and the plane is a tiny dot in the sky. Wimps!
