We've got a place nearby that makes artificial flavors and scents, so occasionally it smells like butterscotch or butter all over the neighborhood.

From mid-afternoon on, the place I've been working in smells like jelly donuts. Sometimes this reminds me to eat lunch; sometimes it puts me off food for another couple hours.

There's a donut factory caddycorner to my worksite.

Fenugreek is one of the things that will impart a distinct odor to one's urine also.

Hey, awesome. Thanks for posting. This has been on my mind a lot over the years, and I was really taken with the original mystery. I love that the NJ flavor factories were one of the posited hypotheses in the original 2005 AskMe thread the day the really strong syrup smell happened.
