23 January 2009

Got my notice My position is officially terminated June 30th. It's almost a relief - I've had 6-monthly scrambles for funding for the past couple of years now. But holy shit! I gotta find a job for reals.
I'm sure you'll figure out something; you're a smart chap :D

Oh shit, don't be like me and make it last a year. Good piece of strategy, having the baby and all on company time and not after the fall.

ThePinkSuperhero knows what she's on about. You'll be in gainful employ lickety-split.

Nice long notice you got, too; 'til July, wow! Make sure to use any vaykaydays before yer done, spend more of their time with that beautiful wee tot of a bobble, sure.

I'm so sorry!

You've definitely got some time to look, which is good.

Oh, yikes. I'm glad you'd already started looking for other jobs, so you don't have to scramble to get started from scratch.

Ouch. Yah, as occhiblu says, at least you've got some time. I personally wouldn't take vacation days, cause they'll pay unused ones out to you. Cash=good. Then I'd negotiate a bit of time without pay between jobs. Wait, that evens out, doesn't it? Hm.

Ah, shit. That sucks.

But TPS and Hugh have it: you're good enough, you're thmart enough and gosh darn it, you'll have a job in no time.

With such a long advance notice, you could very well turn tables soon and be giving them your 2 weeks notice.

... and you PETA folks in the corner, stop your giggling or I'll sic LT on you.

Yeah, it's not too bad - I can plan out some experiments and leave in good shape (ie. with some more data in for other people, so potentially get my name on some more papers). Just not the best economy for job-hunting. Sigh. Worst case scenario, I'll pick up some teaching here and there, and also teach some bridge lessons.

Sorry to hear that 'pode. Remember how I was down in the dumps a few months ago? A month before I hit my panic deadline (December), I was offered 3 postdocs on the same day. You are way smarter than me so you will definitely find something before July. I will send good juju your way.

It's awesome that they gave you notice. *sends good vibes*

Send the baby out to work. She's at least as clever as you and Mr Gaspode put together. Then you can stay at home, watch TV and eat snacks all day.

Only if you send me twiglets, ej.
the baby has work. she is very serious about her arm and leg flailing.

I have to pretend for a minute that I don't know what you do for a living, in which case to "plan out some experiments" sounds like a wonderful and hilarious way to finish up a job.

Also, bridge lessons! It never even occurred to me that people take bridge lessons.

Well that sucks, pode. But only a little, really. I know the job market is terrible, but you've got a lot of advantages. You're capable, charming and you have the luxury of time. You'll be just fine.

Sorry to hear that although the five month notice is much nicer than the normal "clean out your desk now" notice. The job market is tough but you'll have almost a year between now and when 6 month of unemployment run out. Lots of time.
