Patriot [More:]

This is the most romantic photograph I've ever seen.

I like Obama, too, but enough already.
posted by jonmc 22 January | 17:58
Yeah, LT! How dare you post a picture of a cute something that is not a cute bunny/turtle/whatever? Now if it was a picture of Obama dancing with a turtle, jon would have ignored the thread and we wouldn't have a problem.
posted by muddgirl 22 January | 18:02
tell that shit to the fucking tourists, muddgirl, OK. For the past two fucking days it's been nothing but ObamaObamaObamaObamaObamaObamaObamaObamaObamaObama. He's better than the last president, but he's still just a fucking politician. Y'all are going to be in for a huge crash when you realize that the world is still all kinds of fucked up, no matter what.

Dude. It's a nice picture. I'm sorry you're out of beer, but chill the fuck out.
posted by mudpuppie 22 January | 18:07
yeesh, jon, please calm down. (Think how I feel during March Madness - and that's every year). Let people enjoy a positive development for a little bit. You're right, the bloom will be off the rose soon enough and we'll all be on bread lines. Nothing wrong with spending some time enjoying the moment. I understand if you're tired of it, but there are plenty of other things to look at and read until this starts to feel less new and exciting.

A little bit? At this point we've solemnly commemorated evrything except his first poop in the white house toity. I thought Reagenesque hagiography was one of the things we hated about right wingers, right? See ya round.
posted by jonmc 22 January | 18:15
Yeah, if it bothers you, probably a good idea to stay off the internet -- or at least, out of threads like this -- for a week or so.
posted by mudpuppie 22 January | 18:17
Not to be too prickly, but I'd like to enjoy it for at least as many hours as I spent weeks working on the campaign. And no, I'm not caught up yet. It will most assuredly settle down, so please be patient with those of us who want to feel glad in ways we couldn't for a very long time, and in some cases, never.

Let us not forget sweet Reagan.

I think Michele Obama is one of the cutest women ever. It's not so much that she's beautiful, it's more that in this and every other picture you see of the two of them together, you can tell she simply adores her man and feels like she's the luckiest woman in the world.

Or she's a really good supporting actress.
posted by Doohickie 22 January | 18:39
Dude, these two are mad for each other - no way to fake that. This pic isn't Al Gore tongue-strangling Tipper at the podium.

This photo is so damn intimate I almost feel guilty for getting to look at it.

That picture made my heart skip a little. That is completely awesome and will have me smiling for the rest of the night.

I may have to save it!

Forget that; they both adore each other. It's pretty amazing to see the evident waves of love and respect radiate off the two of them, and it's a hell of a change from most of the political relationships you see.

I hope I'm that lucky.
posted by Fuzzbean 22 January | 19:15
Oh Fuzzbean, when you're President, of course everyone will know you're in love! *gallivants away, skipping, skipping ever so merrily away!*

I'm with Jon on this one.

Enough already.

At the moment, you can't move without someone mooning over the man and his wife. Lulu (frigging Lulu) was on the Breakfast sofa spouting on about how Obama's message of hope will enable the UK to win the Eurovision Song contest.

What.The.Fuck.People.

He's not the savior. He's not going to fix the world. He's not going to make the little booboos better. Eight years from now, the terrorist threat will not be gone & there will be no halcyon flower fields growing rampantly round the happy legs of [war torn countries] children.

He's a man doing a difficult job. And the time to adore him will be after he's done that difficult job well. Not now. Not on the second day of his job.

So yes. Enough already.

Y'all can come to Texas, I guess. People still have their stickers on for both Obama and McCain. There were parties, but for the most part it's quiet.

Now in 2000/04, the churches were busy...and lemme tell you, Mr. Bush was commercialized beyond endurance. Pictures of him on the phone on the plane during 9/11 were for sale as part of a collector's set. And, in a bid to lure the Bush Library, a location was propose which would have been at the intersection of George Bush Street and Laura Bush Avenue. Thankfully (at least to me), they chose Dallas instead.

Okay, you know what?

This thread WASN'T about Obama AS GOD OR SAVIOUR OR LET'S PUT HIS SHIT IN THE SMITHSONIAN.

It was about a lovely picture from his inauguration celebration that I found beautiful and wanted people to know about.

Why was it beautiful? Because HOW RARE IS IT THAT WE EVER SEE A POLITICIAN LOOKING LIKE THEY ACTUALLY ARE IN LOVE WITH THEIR WIVES.

The Obamas are normal folks in extraordinary circumstances. And it's beautiful to me to see them behaving in a loving manner towards each other and not faking it for the cameras.

THIS POST IS ABOUT A PHOTOGRAPH. THAT I LIKED. christ.

posted by Lipstick Thespian 23 January | 07:54
It doesn't really seem like anything but meanness to give people a hard time for enjoying the inauguration festivities. It's inevitably going to fade. Nobody needs to be schooled or lectured about what's important. Personally, I'm fucking bored to tears by pictures of cats, but if I went into every such thread saying "enough already" I probably wouldn't be too welcome on this site any more.

Let people enjoy. Skip the thread if you aren't interested. We know that the joy is fleeting and the problems are serious. No one here is naive about that fact. But the election alone is a real accomplishment and I can't understand telling people it's not okay to celebrate. I understand if individuals personally are tired of it, but to those people, please hold your breath for a few days and skip Obama threads here and elsewhere. And don't worry. Given our economy, the war, and foreign policy issues, we won't be able to have the unmitigated gall of continuing to bother anyone with being happy for very long.
posted by Miko 23 January | 09:06
Actually... I'm pretty sure we've only had something like three threads since inauguration day, so I'm guessing we'll end up with an overall average of maybe one a day for this week? Not so bad for inauguration week, really. It's just that everyone is seeing/hearing about it everywhere else, too, so it probably seems like more. This isn't quite as true for me since Greek TV isn't covering it all quite as much as other places, so I didn't get the feeling that it was at all overwhelming here.
posted by taz 23 January | 09:40
This went meta quickly.

You know. I've had a shitty couple of days, and I'm up to there with biting my tongue about stuff that shouldn't really matter. If you want to whoop it up, go ahead. I'm fine with that. But my personal preference is to moan about how everyone has gone Obama crazy and how annoyed it makes me feel.

I'm all for not trampling over peoples opinions, but this whole fucking thread consists of the following :

- I like this picture.
- I'm sick of Obama already.
- You who state the second opinion are BAD.

You should take a minute, and see how this thread has progressed. jon's mildly stated personal opinion which in no way impinged on anyone's partying was jumped on pretty heavily, and he responded in kind.

Yeah - So I'm sick of the ObamaObamaObama. And I'd have hoped that the fact that I and jon just stated that as personal opinion wouldn't kick off a STUPID meta-discussion of what opinions people are and are not allowed to add to what should be a conversation that people aren't emotionally invested in.

A couple of grouchy old men shouldn't be enough to stop your enjoyment of the picture and the current festivities. And you know that.

A couple of grouchy old men shouldn't be enough to stop your enjoyment of the picture and the current festivities. And you know that.

And a thread with a couple of giddy participants feeling something you don't happen to share shouldn't be enough to prompt anyone to come in and shit in the thread, regardless of how "mild" said shitting might be. And you know that, too.

(If that weren't a general unspoken rule around these parts, then I would be willing to bet cash money that every kitty or bunny or hedgehog thread would be derailed with someone going "jesus, enough with the cute baby animals already!" and justifying it by saying "oh, I've had a rough time lately.")

You should take a minute, and see how this thread has progressed. jon's mildly stated personal opinion which in no way impinged on anyone's partying was jumped on pretty heavily, and he responded in kind.

Unless there were comments deleted, Miko's response was not "jumping pretty heavily" on him, not by a long-shot. Nor was mudpuppie's.

Bad couple of days? I'm genuinely sorry to hear it, seanyboy. My personal preference, when I've had a bad couple of days, is either to start a thread of my own to bitch and moan or to stay the fuck away for awhile. Because coming in to someone else's happy thread to piss on the parade is bad form. We all know that.

I hope things look up for you soon.
posted by scody 23 January | 11:59
jon's mild response was met with a mild (and playful) response by muddgirl, which was then met an extremely not-mild response by jon (four 'fucks' and one 'shit).

That's not "grumpy," seanyboy; that's aggressive, and unnecessary.

Personally, I'm fucking bored to tears by pictures of cats, but if I went into every such thread saying "enough already" I probably wouldn't be too welcome on this site any more.

This. Four (or more?) years of bunny pictures, compared with one week (and, by taz's count, three posts) of Obama love?

Fight the real fight.

I kid. I don't care how many OMG Bunny posts there are each day. I know people enjoy them, and that's totally okay. Personally, they do nothing for me. It's not something I'm compelled to scream about, even on my shittiest days. Not clicking, in fact, is pretty damn easy.

The difference here is that currently my entire life seems to be saturated with this damn subject. If my entire life (not just metachat) were filled with cute pictures of animals, I'd probably be making the same comments.
This isn't about a general consensus of how to behave on metachat. This is about being frustrated by having yet another corner of my life infiltrated by the subject. I'm saying "Enough Already", and this is not some specific criticism of metachat (which has only had three recent obama posts), it's a general criticism of the fact that the whole GodDamned world has gone mad.

A seven word comment from jon and an instantly sarcastic & personal response back. Then, a bunch of people telling him to calm down after he reacts to that sarcastic comment.

Oh and mudpuppie - I disagree. It wasn't a mild and playful response back.

I'm not arguing this shit out any more. You can't see where I'm coming from and it's more fool me for getting riled up about it.

posted by seanyboy 23 January | 12:18
One other thing. Even if it was meant as a playful comment - It doesn't come off that way. It pissed me the hell off, and it wasn't even directed at me.
posted by seanyboy 23 January | 12:23
I apologize if my comment came off as mean and/or as a personal attack. There's no malice in my heart towards anyone here.

Also, it's a little unclear whether seanyboy is confusing me and mudpuppie. I'd like to apologize to mudpuppie if my comment makes anyone think she's a cruel-hearted person as well.

I agree with this, in theory, but in practice, it often feels to the original poster as if the grouch is wantonly and mean-spiritedly taking a piss on his parade, which could get anyone's hackles up.

I think, in the future, it would help if people would picture their post pooh-poohers less as cruel, vindictive bullies, and more like these guys:

It is a lovely photo, Gaspode, though the one from the front page of the Times of the First Couple walking down PA Ave arm in arm, hand in hand, both smiling, her leaning into him makes me gush.

I see the trouble with this thread as words being put in others' mouths. There are a whole host of reasons for people to be excited, and a whole host of reasons for people to be cynical, and it does nobody any good when people throw those reasons into others' craws. Yeah, it's a crummy world, so what; it's not really worth saying. Let people have their own reasons for liking what they like. And yeah, cute flies here, and yeah, politics is maybe as usual, and maybe the reaction is, too, but the way these commenters upthread are going about it, endowing individual posters with every thought they themselves are tired of; hell, if you have something to say, talk about it. But don't talk about what you imagine others are saying, or thinking. Shit, I can't stop talking about the inauguration for a lot of reasons. Great political pageantry. Resonance with history, and the dreams of important people like MLK. The importance of the racial aspects of the thing, not just to black Americans, but to all Americans. The inclusion of people who've been left out for a long time. Maybe some of that's smoke and mirrors, maybe some is politics as usual. But much of it is unusual, and to reduce someone else's opinion on these things the way most of the main combatants do upthread is dogshit thinking. You heard me: dogshit.

It is a lovely photo, and so what if terrorism will exist after Obama's eight years are over. It existed long before 9/11, too, and just because many of us were convinced it was new, we were special, that somehow fear was patriotic; that somehow all the shit in the world means this wasn't a shining moment in a lot of people's lives for a lot of reasons, well, that's just dumb and unworthy.

I love you people, and while I don't think it's the most romantic picture ever, I think the fight in this thread, and my own comment here, is rife with dickishness. Especially now that I read all this stuff on preview; I'm the biggest asshole of all because I'm about to hit "Post" anyway.

Talk about putting words in people's mouths. But that's just how I see it. Maybe others see differently. I don't know, and I wish I didn't care.

On preview, yeah, I should be more even-tempered in my calls for even-temperedness. Sorry to call people's thinking "dogshit." That wasn't cool. Otherwise, this comment is just me responding to myself, completing the dialog; great picture tho, amirite?

You know, whatever dickishness was in this thread before, looking at those two just makes me feel all better. Seriously.

I'm sorry that people are so overwhelmed by the Obama stuff. I understand it, too. That would be me, under most other circumstances. I don't know why it's different this time, but I really, really, really am basking, still. Those pictures make me feel good. I mean, I look at them, and I actually feel happy.

My life's not the greatest right now. In fact, 2009 has been really shitty so far. But when I see those pictures, the absolute pure joy in them makes me feel joyful too. For me, that stuff is the ONLY bright spot right now.

That'll wear off. For me, and for everyone else. But right now, even though it's really kinda petty, and even though it doesn't affect my life in any tangible, day-to-day way, I'm hanging on to it.

I understand the fatigue, though, of people who don't experience the same boost from it. I guess we're all saddled with our emotions. In this case, I just happen to be on the feel-good end of it.

I realized that one reason why I don't feel at all fed up, and yet some people do seem to be, is that I don't have television. So I don't feel like Obama content is "everywhere." I kind of have to go looking for it, on the news sites and NPR, and it doesn't seem at all overplayed because I'm not a passive recipient. It's great. Occasionally I wish I had TV, especially lately, but since I don't, I don't feel like I'm a victim of content I'd rather not hear/see.
