14 January 2009

Stir Crazy is setting in. I can't go anyplace, it's too cold to sit outside on the porch, and I'm sick of everything on TV and the internet.
Um, read a book?

Oh that's right, you deal with books all day. Um, learn to knit? Do a dinosaur model kit or a jigsaw puzzle? Lift weights?

Can't you even go places on crutches?

I can't put any weight on my feet and I live on the third floor of a walkup. Plus the sidewalks are icy and it's cold out, so going out is probably not a great idea.

Ugh. That sounds horrid, I'm so sorry. Can you take up a new hobby or project? One that doesn't require walking, natch. Things I can think of off the top of my head: create a budget, clean out drawers, draw, take an online lesson (language? woodworking? knitting/crochet?), write a song, do an upper body chair workout,

Plus I have to depend on Pips for just about everything, which is a burden for her and incrdibly frustrating for me. The one upside is that I'm kicking my nicotine habit, which is probably contributing to my stir crazies.

Aw, hell, I'd just take an ambien and sleep. So it's probably good that I'm not in your position.

Poor booie... You're no burden at all. You just have a tired, grumpy wife is all. Love d'pie...

Maybe watch a movie or some M*A*S*H?

(p.s. -- my internet's workin' at work... yay! :)

surfthechannel.com has lots and lots of TV shows...

can I have some of gaspode's ambien?

pips: thanks, honey. I've been sipping beer and flipping channels and I have one thing to say: what's with all the makeover shows? why do have this bizarre obsession with remaking people? Let people be themselves.
posted by jonmc 14 January | 13:24
Paradoxically, "being themselves" for some people includes an enjoyment of remaking themselves.

You don't come across as someone who plays PC games. But given the circumstances maybe you're not going to mind. Wikipedia has a big list of old and free games.

Personally, I'd recommend the Marathon trilogy, only because it's a long and cerebral game. But there's a bunch of stuff in there, and most of it's pretty good.

Also, this site of NES games you can play in the browser has kept me occupied more than once.

If I could make it over there, I'd drop some off for you, jonmc. Should mix up nicely with your beer...

If we all were reducing to being ourselves, the world would be nothing but a bunch of insufferable boobs. These shows give the lowest common denominator something to shoot for. (And for some of us not in that category, something to laugh hysterically at.)

Perfect time, old bean, for you to start writing a book...hint, hint.

You could earn about $0.25 doing some work on a mechanical turk task on amazon.

*To entertain Jon, I put on a show: Buggs Bunny: Hair- Raising Hare. All parts, full costume, and reminds Jon that Monsters have such INteresting lives.*

Get better soon, Jon!

Just get an electric guitar and take some time and learn how to play.

Would you like a visit this evening? I'm babysitting until about 6:30 over on Ditmars anyway, and could stop by after that for a little while.

grab a camera and look out the rear window for any pretty girls who may be at risk.

Or maybe not.

When I'm doped up, immobile and bored I find hidden object games fun (although not really at any other time), as well as jigsaw puzzles. They don't require too much concentration but still leave you feeling like you've achieved something, and can take up a lot of time. The Mystery Case Files games are quite fun, in particular (big tip - always, always run your virus eater before installing if you download any games).

Damn, Jon, I'd love to be heading your way but my doc said getting into a cardio rehab program right now is probably my last chance at surviving another five years. At least you haven't started shopping online.

Ok, I'm in for the night- maybe tomorrow night? Let me know!

I love makeover shows! How did you manage to take out your leg again?
posted by gomichild 14 January | 19:52
Most of the time, the people in the makeover shows don't want to be themselves; they'd rather be or look like someone else, and can't do it on their own (due to lack of resources, laziness, inertia, willpower, etc.). Or maybe they're scared to take that first big step and need some help along the way to give them that shoveover.

<reverse psychology>Whatever you do, don't click on this link, which I found via a "Best of" MeFi thread</reverse psychology>
