Waiting for a recruiter to call/email I got an email yesterday from the recruiter for a job that I'm up for saying, "We're about to make a decision, send me your salary range". So now I can't do anything but sit here and obsessively check my email, waiting to find out. It's only the second job interview that I've gotten in two and a half months; jobs are really, really tight here.[More:]I really want this job, it's interesting Java development work in a great location that I can take the bus to or bicycle to. I should be getting some errands done today but I can't leave the laptop in case they email me.
Oh yeah, there's pretty much nothing you can do in that situation but obsess.

Sending good mojo....

It's amazing how different this lay-off has been from three years ago when I was downsized. That time I got three months severance and didn't even bother to look for a job for about four months while I finished grad school and then took a month's breather after that. Financially, I was actually in worse shape then than now but the economy was decent and I wasn't too worried. I ended up taking a job at the invitation of a friend without ever even starting a real job search. This time, I've been contacting everyone I know, applying to every job that I'm qualified or even marginally qualified for, talking to six or seven head-hunters and nothing. If I get any response it's, "we've suspended hiring for right now until we figure out what's going on."

I had an issue with my unemployment claim two weeks ago and tried to call the center to get it fixed and ended up getting a busy signal for four days until I quit. There are no unemployment offices in PA anymore, the only way to do business is via phone or Internet but I couldn't get a response. So, I found the address for the state employment call center in the area and drove there and walked up to this unmarked building (ironically on the site of a long gone steel mill) and started talking to the guys out for a smoke. One of them took pity on me and said, "give me your claim sheet and I'll see what I can do." He went inside the call center, through the door marked, "this is not an employment service center, please call [the always busy number]" and after ten minutes came back and said that he'd fixed it. I stood there and chatted with him while he finished his smoke and he said that they are working 12 hour shifts six days a week and can't keep up with the new unemployment claims.

Yikes, Octo that's scary. Way to go on circumventing the busy signal from hell. Good luck on the job, I'm send you good vibes :)

Wow, you should be able to leverage a story like that into a job if you get a chance to talk to someone. Follow-through and determination like that is really impressive!

Sending good vibes to the job-karma-gods.

Bah, no word today. Now I'm starting to overthink it. Is not hearing anything a good sign or a bad sign?

Most likely good. Crossing my fingers for you.

Octo, that's a scary story indeed.
But more importantly: best of luck to you.

Maybe you should have e-mailed them your salary range. They'd be more likely to get back to you if you did that.

Good luck, octothorpe. A delay isn't necessarily a bad thing. I know in our organization, it takes up to a week after we make a hiring decision to get the paperwork through the various VPs and HR. And in that week we're not suppose to contact anyone, in case something comes up in HR that negates everything.
