The Pope is a dick, news at 11.

And while I agree with your sentiment, not having a horse in either race (not catholic or gay), what would you expect from the Pope? "Pope names first openly gay (yet celibate) Cardinal?" No, the Catholic church is dying, and this kind of thing is the last dying grasp.

Fuck them.

Area Catholics smile and nod at pope, continue about lives as usual. :P
Seriously, yeah, screw the pope re: this, but I can't think of any Catholics (my still-practicing family members included) that this will actually make a different for.

Fuck them.

Or don't, as the case may be. We're having more fun, anyway.

I don't understand Catholics who say the Nicene Creed during Mass and then later say they don't follow the Pope. The Creed states "one holy catholic and apostolic Church": if you say the Creed, you believe that the teachings of Rome come directly from Christ. Drives me crazy.

Just because you love the company don't mean you love your boss.

Bless you arse_hat! My mother and I stay up wrapping Christmas presents watching the midnight mass from the Vatican, just waiting to see the blue electricity fly from his eyes! I'm so glad it's not just the two of us who suspect this, anymore.

Don't be so harsh; it's just taking him a little while to come around, but that doesn't mean he can't change. As I understand it, for example, he now says Galileo was "not such a bad guy, I guess".

Also of interest, showdown at the You're-Not-Okay Corral: Parish at risk of excommunication

St Mary's is involved in numerous charities, gives communion to gays and allows women to give the homily. Its services routinely depart from orthodox liturgies.

Archbishop Bathersby wrote to Father Kennedy in August, demanding an end to "practices that separate" St Mary's, which has one of Queensland's biggest Catholic congregations, from communion with the church.

...

In reply, the community said it had adopted the recent statement by Pope Benedict to the bishops of France, which declared that nobody should be rejected by the Catholic Church. The letter said St Mary's was in communion with the church and warned the church it should not forget its history: it had excommunicated Galileo, barred Mary Mackillop and "stood idly by while children were abused".

good answer.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with my catholic man regarding the old pope's anti-condom stance:
-"Hey, how can you use condoms? You're catholic. The pope says you shouldn't!"
him: - "Well, I shouldn't be sleeping with you before we get married either, so I'm going to hell either way."

I've always thought of this installment of the Pope as the George Bush of that institution. And yeah, that Star Wars pic is perfect.

It's especially easy to ignore this pope as most catholics (at least the ones I know) figure he won't be in charge that long.

if you say the Creed, you believe that the teachings of Rome come directly from Christ.

That can't be true, because Anglicans say the Nicene creed as well, and even though it says "And I believe one Catholick and Apostolick Church", Anglicans obviously don't accept the authority of the Pope.

Well, at least in my step-family, this is like serious business. My stepmother and her sisters are hardcore Irish Catholics, and talking with them about anything religious or political is like talking to the 19th century.

I can't stand the Catholic Church's ludicrous double standards. I worked for a major Jesuit institution, and knew several folks there who were Fathers who also were gay. And couldn't deal. Hence the Fatherhood.

It's my understanding that "one holy catholic and apostolic Church" means that there is exactly one Church, directly from Christ. The Catholic Church is different from other Christian denominations in that it believes that the Church is the organization proper, not just the whole of its followers, and so the Pope speaks with the full authority of the Apostles. So the Pope isn't just the boss or a co-ordinator: his is the voice of the Church, and to ignore it is to ignore the Church.

That's why I left Catholicism. Still Christian, though.

Why does the Pope hate gay penguins so much? Are they not also her divine creation? I'd rather believe in gay penguins than the Pope - they're always so well dressed and he wears a MooMoo.

Speaking on Monday, Pope Benedict XVI warned that gender theory blurred the distinction between male and female and could thus lead to the "self-destruction" of the human race.

Holy catholic church does not equal "Roman Catholic Church". I think the meaning of "catholic" is general or universal.

The Pope is the head of the Roman Catholic Church.
posted by Carbolic 23 December | 12:03
Carbolic, I think you're correct if you're not Roman Catholic, but if you are, "one holy catholic and apostolic Church" does mean the Vatican and all its followers.
