Bargain! OMG! [More:]
I'm a keen cook, and for ages I've coveted a Le Creuset casserole dish or a similar enameled cast-iron piece. They're horribly expensive, but a local cookshop had some fairly small (22cm) ones made by Chasseur reduced from £75 to £46. A bit smaller than I'd have preferred, but I was going to treat myself to one for Christmas.

Now I am a huge fan of the German discount supermarkets that are stealing customers away from Waitrose and M&S Food, and twice a week I get emails from Lidl and Aldi with details of their weekly specials. In case you're not familiar with these stores (I know Aldi operates in the States), they sell alongside the normal foodstuffs 'weekly specials' which can be anything from clothing to toys to car accessories.

So, this week one of the specials was for a cast-iron casserole. My nearest Aldi is a fair old drive away, and as this is the last weekend before Christmas I knew it'd be busy, so I drove over to Romford early, and was waiting outside as Aldi opened at 10am (Sunday trading hours are weird in the UK).

They had two colour options - orange or blue, and I chose blue.

So, compare and contrast.

Oh, and I also got one of these too. Again, a slightly better price than Le Creuset.

I cannot describe how happy these have made me. I'm not normally an acquisitive person, but these are such great quality for such a low price and the two dishes together cost less than I was going to pay for one tiny little one.

*does the happy dance*
they send EMAILS?

I want these!

Yes!!!!

I found a great bargain on a lovely blue Lodge enameled cast iron casserole on amazon.com, but it would cost a fortune to ship here. I was thinking of getting it sent to my parents for us to take back with us once we finally make it to the U.S., but my natural indolence kicked in and I never got around to it. (If I have to suffer delayed gratification, I'm less quick to actually move my lazy ass, which I guess saves us money... and thus, lazy = good. Right?)

This reminds me of my best yard sale scoop ever: a small, orange Le Creuset pot with a spout and lid. I'm fairly sure the guy didn't know what he was selling, as he gave it to me for a dollar (!) -- it is now the customary vessel for cooking the Thanksgiving cranberry sauce in the AwkwardPause household. So pretty!

taz, I was about to say, I have a lodge cast iron that looks exactly like that first link. essexjan, I know you visit the states from time to time, if you have a yen for cast iron and end up in Tennessee, I can point you at the Lodge Cast Iron place. It will probably require checking some luggage. :)

I have some regular lodge cast iron stuff, not the enamel, but I spent a lot of time seasoning it, so it's quite nice to cook with. The dutch oven I use all the time for no-knead bread.

There's a Le Creuset outlet near me, and they occasionally have seconds at a discount, plus they mail discount coupons for like 25-35% pretty regularly. I haven't gotten anything major from them yet, but a friend's wife does, and tipped me off to the discount thing. I did get one of these though.
