19 December 2008

Weather report! What's it doing by you? Here it's snow, snow, and more snow.[More:]I'm staying home from work today because it's unlikely I'd make it out of our subdivision. Originally I was going to swap cars with my husband (his is all wheel drive and has a lot of ground clearance), but it was clear that WHOEVER drove my car was going to get stuck. It's just too low to the ground.
Foggy here, and supposed to hit 70 degrees F (21 degrees C) today. It's also REALLY humid and damp.

Cold, almost freezing, and pouring pouring rain here in the 'burgh. For some reason, it never seems to precipitate much here when it's below freezing, we just get snow flurries but then we'll get 1/2 an inch of rain when it's warmer.

Fog, 99% humidity, 54.8ºF (too lazy to calculate Cº) and going to hit 67º.

Dull grey skies with occasional rain over at this end of Scandinavia. So far this December I have seen the sun exactly once (a week last Tuesday), and even that was a momentary glimpse.
posted by misteraitch 19 December | 08:24
Well, it's 11.25 pm and still 23c and 74% humidity. Today was 37c at home and 36c in Townsville (where I was). The other day we had 34c and 100% humidity reported. It's summer, what do you expect?

Pissing fucking freezing cold rain!

It's cold here today, but not snowing. We've got tons already though. We're gonna drive down to Hamilton tonight to see our pal's band open for The Constantines and AlexisonFire (neither of whom I really dig) and it sounds like we're going to be driving into a winter storm. Should be interesting.

High 20's snow. . .we need to somehow drive to SF tomorrow and the weather is not looking good. As of now, we will need to make it over to the coast (iffy also) and then go down 101 adding at least 3 hours to the trip.
posted by danf 19 December | 08:54
Nothing yet. I'm heading out to go lifeguard at the pool for a few hours. By the time I'm done the storm is supposed to be in full effect so I'm HOPING it's gonna be okay to drive the few miles home and I'm nearly certain there will be no one at the pool.

I was really looking forward to having the day off work, but last night's forecast for three to five inches of snow (in central NJ) turned out to yield the dreaded "wintry mix," which makes no one happy. So here I am, watching the rain from ny desk.

Unseasonably warm - 57 F right now. I walked the dogs this morning without a coat; it's been on and off cloudy and/or raining and warm all week. Kind of weird but we need the rain after the drought this year, so whatever.
posted by mygothlaundry 19 December | 09:44
Foggyy weather, sort of muggy and high-60s (which is sad because I'm wearing a cold-weatehr outfit today and it's too hot).
posted by muddgirl 19 December | 09:58
Not a lot going on here, though we were expecting snow, sleet, rain.
I even worked from home today anticipating gross weather. There are just some tiny flakes now.
posted by rmless2 19 December | 10:15
Some flakes/cold rain falling. I'm praying for no nasty weather tomorrow. Six hour drives in the snow tend to suck. Once a week is enough, thanks.

Here in the Puget Sound area we've been hammered with snow the past few days. I lived in Minnesota for 50+ years and so my default used to be "Ahh, you West Coast wussies, it's just a little snow ferchrissake," but between the (a) goddamned HILLS and (b) total inadequacy of equipment for plowing, sanding, etc., I am now every bit as freaked out as the natives and am confining myself to foot travel until this stuff melts. (Which could be after Christmas, given that there's another big snowstorm on the way ...)

9 celsius, (about 48 F I think), feels colder because of the wind, steely grey skies with occasional rain. This kind of weather (and 4pm darkness) is what mulled wine, mince pies and champagne were invented for.
posted by altolinguistic 19 December | 10:52
on preview - snow is like that here in the UK, katallison. We don't get that much of it but we're totally unprepared when it happens, so it's much more disruptive than it is in well-organised countries where they're used to it.

Here in Toronto the snow started around 8 in the morning and now it's coming down bigtime. Blowin' all over the place, too.
Last day of school! I can't help but feel the excitement through osmosis. Christmas holidays and a shitload of snow, what's better than that?
posted by chococat 19 December | 11:05
Woo! Now there is real snow. Snow snow snow! Big flakes and lots of 'em. It's nice to be indoors. I think I'll go make some waffles.
posted by rmless2 19 December | 11:11
It's currently 37F here, at 8am-ish. Supposed to get up to 59F. Which is a warming trend, as the highs have been in the low 50s for the last couple of days. And rainy. Which sucks mainly because the buildings I work in do not have heat, because it's not usually necessary, and space heaters are really not the same.

I bought our Christmas tree yesterday and stuck it out on the back patio (undecorated, in the stand) until we figure out how to rearrange the furniture to get it inside. I'm a little worried that the water in the stand may have frozen, but I'm too wimpy this morning to go check. (Not that I'd be able to do anything about it anyway, I suppose.)

They're predicting 12" of snow today into tonight. It hasn't started yet, but we do have the wet-cotton sky already.

First real snow of the winter fell Wednesday. It looks nice. Now we are about ready to go into the Northern New England perma-snow-cover that lasts until March. I don't really mind for the most part; snow is beautiful.

One of the bars in a town nearby used to have a special: dollar Guiness whenever snow is falling.

Snow and ice and icky stuff. But I have a snow day off work today!

snowing like crazy. On Moday it's gonna be a fucking fun time getting to my podiatrist appointment.

I'm at home with a sick baby, but I *have* to go to work in a few minutes. Hope I can make it there.

Cold and clear here, just a little light cloud.

Mid-Maryland, it's just doing this nasty drizzly rain crap. It looks quite cold outside. (Luckily, I get to sit at home and do nothing since I've got Fridays off.)

Flew out of snowstorms in Vancouver (!) to seriously fucking cold here in Calgary: -25C/-13F, supposed to drop to -28C/does-it-really-matter-it's-damned-cold F tonight, but will be up to a balmy -10C/14F for xmas. Snow everywhere. My stepmother assures me that this is unseasonably cold for Calgary. I'm all kitted out in my dad's old parka (I think it's older than me, actually) and my brother's skookum boots (the old reliable sorel type with the waterproof outside and the thick felt liner), and my dad left some great sweaters here, which I've been shamelessly appropriating, so the cold can't touch me. That, plus no way am I going outside. Well, except to smoke.

One thing I do like about this weather, which I remember from living in Edmonton, is the way the snow squeaks under your boots. One thing I don't like, which I also remember from Edmonton, is the way your nose freezes shut when you breathe.

Snow, ice, then some more snow for good measure.
posted by Daniel Charms 19 December | 12:43
we got a foot so far.
no sign that it will stop any time soon.

so, yeah, I've determined how much my life is worth... under $30K. Since I'm most likely going to fucking die because I came into work today, in terror I'd be on the layoff list if I didn't.
Every school, organization, and most businesses in a 50 mile radius are closed.

Big fluffy flakes here in Southeast Portland. Our jade plants have gone all flaccid, so I brought them inside. I just hope it's not too late for them!

Snow is coming down much heavier now. Should have gotten more cigarettes and food YESTERDAY.
posted by TrishaLynn 19 December | 13:58
Although there was an ice storm here on Tuesday, today it's 68, sunny and breezy. I'll probably eat lunch outside.

Huh, rained like hell all morning, now it's in the forties and bright and sunny with blue skies. Strange.
posted by octothorpe 19 December | 14:14
Hey guys. Thought you might like to know that the fog cleared. However, it may be starting to rain soon. Right now it's mostly cloudy and Too Damn Hot For Winter.

It's warm here. High in the eighties today. Currently 77.

Pittsburgh is in some sort of timewarp into early spring today. Gorgeous, but very strange.

Crazy snow now. I've shoveled twice today and will probably need to again.
And I just got back from the Beer Store...I feel so Canadian, pulling my two-four back from the Beer Store on a toboggan.

-11C/11F, clear and several inches of snow on the ground. It's still right now, but the wind pops up now and then. We actually had a real blizzard Wednesday (they're rare here). Supposed to be mostly sunny tomorrow and more snow on Sunday. We're not supposed to get above freezing for the foreseeable future.
posted by deborah 19 December | 19:22
Just below 30F today, lots of snow last night and more due tomorrow night. We had a similar December snowstorm a year ago and it seemed like we were digging out for weeks afterward, although actually we had a warm spell in January and it mostly melted over a span of a few sunny days.
posted by stilicho 19 December | 22:54
We just got about an inch of sleet here in Mid-MO, then an inch or two of snow on top of that. The crappy part was that this all coincided with finals week (I think I got my first 4.0. *fingers crossed*.)
