16 December 2008

I lived in Bodega Bay for over 18 months of my dissertation. Birds was filmed there and I know all the locations, even the (kid) extras who are now adults. My room was ~20 feet from the farm house where much of the film took place. I am totally going to get this for some of the staff that were so helpful.

There's a Phantom of the Opera Ken doll with burn marks.

I swear to God that I went through a Toys R Us during the Clinton administration and saw Intern Barbie, a professionally dressed doll with the top two or three buttons of her blouse undone. I have scoured the internet and can find no reference to such a thing, so I can only conclude it was some kind of artistic prank, and so I am still kicking myself for not buying it.

That's hilarious, but I'm surprised Mattel went for such a thing.

I want a Niki Lauda Barbie. They could just hold it over an open flame for a few seconds.

I lived in Bodega Bay

I am now picturing a pristine inlet lined with raggedy-assed corner candy and lotto stores.

I bet a Sarah Palin Barbie with a red suit, glasses, and an updo would sell really well. And also be tortured over flames a lot.

I wish dude. It was voted one of the most expensive small towns in America

Here's a poster I just bought. The building by the ocean on the bottom right is my lab.

I spent a lot of time there as a kid. My father had experiments at the U.C. marine biology facility there, and we used to go with him once in awhile when he had to go check stuff out. It was also only a couple of hours away from where we lived, so we'd often hit the Sonoma and Mendocino coasts. When I was young, it was a much more salty town. The fish store at the wharf was really cool, and the locals were a much more interesting bunch. Bodega Bay the town is actually inland a bit from the bay, and it used to freak me the fuck out. The town looked exactly like it did in the movie, and I had a pretty active imagination. As I got older, the scariness wore off, and the area got more and more commercial. The beaches around there are still beautiful, but the towns aren't as interesting anymore. I'd be interested in going back and traveling the north coast and seeing my impressions since it's been nearly 15 years since I moved away from there.

You're confusing Bodega with Bodega Bay, you old geezer!

eekacat: I work at that marine lab. Bodega (not bb) has a real divey bar called the casino. The bartender told me that they are planning a remake of the birds. The schoolhouse also recently got a makeover. The movie freaked me out as a kid too.
