So what do people *do* on Twitter? I just joined, now I'm feeling like an idiot. It looked fun until I realize that I don't know anyone on Twitter...
My SO says that my brain is just too highly tuned for this world (probably his way of saying I'm non compos mentis most of the time). So tell me folks -- what do you do on Twitter?
This is the main indication—at least for me—that I don't need to be on Twitter. The general consensus from people who've just signed up for Twitter is "Now what?"

Personally, I never seem to do anything on it. But plenty of other people seem to use it all the time--here's a[n incomplete] list of Mecha Twitterers.

Follow this person. I made that roasted veg thing last night and it was totally delicious. I love 140 character recipes.

I actually really like twitter. I didn't think I was going to but once I got into it I found I liked the character constraint, I liked seeing what people were up to and I just generally enjoyed it. I check it about three times a day on the web and post something about once a day.

I also like twitter very much, and follow a combination of friends, interesting people from Pittsburgh I've found via search, Mefites (HI WENDELL), and amusing folk like Stephen Frye and Carl Zimmer. Searching certain keywords can give an interesting real-time reading on how people are reacting to certain events. Sort of a low-pressure way of checking up on things happening around me.

I follow a woman called "museumtweets" who is studying how museums use Twitter. She has 200-something museums in her "follow" list, and reading all those factoids and newsy bits is fun.

I like twitter too. It gives you quick updates on what people are doing. The text message format is perfect for minimal distraction and you don't need to log onto a website for those status updates.

I think you need a few people on there to get use out of it, but once you get those people it's good.

I really like Twitter, but it's not terribly useful until you follow some people. Follow some MeChazens, search for people whose blogs you read. Then it can become more of a conversation.

I don't have access to Twitter while at work, only for an hour or two in the evenings, so I've had to unfollow some of my more... chatty contacts (HI WENDELL). I also followed a bunch of people in my city whom I don't really know, but it was neat to see all of their tweets when a small plane crashed near downtown, or when the power went out. I also have a handful of real life friends on Twitter, and we sometimes use it to coordinate evening activities and the like.

I follow the funny things TPS says....

As for "do" people leave little comments about what is happening, sometimes links to other things...

Hell, I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing on Facebook.

I signed up to use it as a sort of mini-blog. I was essentially using it as a writing exercise, trying to encapsulate thoughts into 140 charcters. I haven't been doing it for a while, though. I should get back into it. It's kind of an interesting medium for my purposes.

I don't really understand what it's for, so don't do anything with it.
