I need a haircut. [More:]
Anyone like suggesting styles?

I don't have an appointment or anything, but it's imminent because things are looking rough right now. My last haircut was in June (I think?) So the ends are rough, plus I'm growing out old dark colour that I need to keep trimming off.

Here's what I'm working with:

- I have long hair -- I guess below-brastrap in the back, with some long layers.

- Generally 'normal' hair, not particularly oily or dry, though I do tend to go a long time between haircuts for financial reasons, thus the ends do dry out.

- Medium brown, with scattered grey, which I sometimes colour with drugstore stuff. This doesn't seem to affect its health. My hair doesn't tend to hold on to colour super-well, which I have always assumed means it's reasonably healthy.

- Wavy, but straightens well by hairdryer and straightens more as the day progresses. Not easy to keep stick-straight, though -- usually there's at least a bit of curl at the ends.

- The texture is normal, I think, but I am always told I have "a lot of hair".

- When I get short layers they tend to pouf up or look mushroomy, so I always stick to long layers. This could be a styling problem though. I like layers in theory and even on other people but I have gotten the "shoulder shelf" cut many times by inept stylists. (This is when half of my hair is long enough to go behind my shoulders and the shorter front layers stay beside my head, making a weird two-length stepped look that really bugs me.)

- Humidity tends to make it curl up and get frizzy.

- I like low-maintenance. I've been drying my hair lately, but for much of my life I've gone to school/work with wet hair. I don't plan to go back to that, but I do like being able to put some stuff in it and zap it with a hairdryer and my hands and come out with something reasonably nice. I wouldn't be able to convince myself to use a curling implement or flatiron or anything like that on a regular basis.

- I currently have long, sideswept bangs, and I do like that look. For a long time I had blunt bangs (once nicknamed Winnie Cooper) and I've also had no bangs (I like the ease of this but I don't think it's flattering on me. Usually it happens when I get fed up with my bangs and decide to grow them out, only to be unhappy with the result.)

- My hair grows quickly. Definitely faster than average.

- I put my hair up and down through the day, and rarely keep it 100% one way or the other.

- I wash my hair daily right now, but have practiced the no-shampoo thing in the last few years, going up to two weeks without shampooing. Right now I'm finding that's not working for me, but I could eventually go back to it. When I don't shampoo I still shower and I almost always rinse my hair thoroughly. If I'm in a really *really* big rush I still shower (morning routine) but only shampoo/rinse my bangs, which is a decent compromise.

- Long hair is a comfort thing for me. The shortest I have had it in the last 25 years has been a collar-length bob, and that was 'short' to me. I tend to find longer hair sexy. This is not rational at all, but I am curvy (boobtacular and a tiny bit overweight) and I feel like I have a small head with small features, so having short hair makes me feel like my body is too big for my head. I KNOW THIS IS PROBABLY CRAZY.

- My face-shape is roundish/ovalish, I think pretty neutral, but again, small, and my features are small.

- I tend to dress pretty casually and simply, and I'm not a cutting-edge fashionista. I don't have a lot of expensive stuff. I wear Chuck Taylors regularly but I also like skirts and dresses (with flats mostly). I wear hats in the winter.

I'll post a couple of haircuts I saw online that I like. I can take one of myself if it's necessary, though I'd rather not post my face all up in here. If you need more info just let me know.

All suggestions welcome! Thanking ye in advance.
I can't speak for women's hair stylists, but my best cuts have been by stylists who went through at least the basic Sassoon course. They ain't cheap but the cuts still look really good even five months later and I have gotten away with seven months. That's a lot for a guy's hair. I can even follow that with an ordinary mall-based stylist by telling them to trim it back following the course of the previous stylist with pretty good results.

It doesn't matter that you don't wear "expensive" clothes. Your hair, skin, teeth, and body is the cake. Have the best hair you possibly can. Don't be afraid to cut it. So many women (including me) are stuck on the long is better because I'm not stick thin and petite thing. If your long hair flatters, keep it. If it's not in good condition, and you look good with short hair, chop it. Get something modern and awesome.

It sounds like you don't want short, but if I were brunette with bangs, I'd totally go the Katie Holmes route.

More Katie Holmes hair.

Good luck, loiseau.

More celebrity linkage:

I like Nicole Ritchie's long bob with side swept bangs. It's very pretty and chic. Though, not as chic as Katie's.

I JUST got like seven inches cut off my hair and had it done into an angled bob with bettie page bangs (just above shoulders in the front, maybe 2" total in the back. Ditching the length took years off my face, seriously. And I'm NOT skinny by any means, so I always avoided short. Going short and ditching the cut I've had since high school actually made me look younger, though, since I don't have that "I've been rocking the same look since high school" thing going on anymore, and a photographer friend said the weight of my hair pulling down wasn't making me look heavier and downtrodden anymore.

The angled bob worked surprisingly well with my hair. I've always seen it done on super straight hair, but mine's wavy verging on flat out curly, and it looks cute. Plus, I can straighten, too.

I never go with layers since they don't grow out well and I'm bad at haircut upkeep. Although I did get a great eggplanty red color I'll have to have the salon keep up on (I've never even seen this shade at Sallys), so maybe that will change.

OK, my hair looks like this but about three inches longer in the front, and with bangs. Her hair texture is similar to mine, though. I couldn't believe it worked.

Kellydamnit, does 'angled bob' mean one length but slightly longer in the front? That picture is cute...

To be honest I have no idea if longer or shorter hair looks best on me. Whenever I've had my hair cut shorter I've wound up growing it again, which suggests that it hasn't rocked my world. I'm kind of open... but I need expert advice, I think. I definitely don't want to look like one of those women who's proudly never cut her hair in her whole life so it's 8 feet long but all scraggly and gross.

LoriFLA, I do like those pics, especially the Holmes. I think the Ritchie one is too smooth and straight for me -- even if I got it that straight (which I could never be arsed to do) it would get a bit wavy as soon as I stepped outside.

At the moment, I love Olga Kurylenko's do in the new Bond movie.

Leaving the house in the morning and after a long day at the office.

I basically have Keira Knightley's long layered haircut here. It's been surprisingly easy to manage -- I blow-dry my bangs till they're bone-dry (to confound the dastardly cowlicks), then blow-dry sections around a round brush only till they're damp, just to coax my waves into the right direction. This all takes about 15 minutes or so. Then I let it dry the rest of the way as I drive into work. (If I don't have 15 minutes to spare, I just dry the bangs, towel-dry the rest, and put it up in a loose bun or pony tail. A few hours later, if I want to take the bun or pony tail out, it will be dry and wavy, though without as much body/volume as when I do it the other way.)

For product, I tend to use very little: a bit of Frizz-Ease serum before drying, and sometimes a dab of finishing cream after drying.

ooh, I love that hair, scody. I'm sure it looks great on you.

All of these hairstyles are beautiful. I would so have bangs if my forehead was big enough. I have a tiny short forehead, so bangs look dumb on me, and they never sweep nicely to the side.

Yep, exactly. Mine's just above shoulder length in the front, and only a couple inches long at the back
