Consider it a blessing. It's an obsession that I'm very happy to have in my life. My mother-in-law was a voice major and forbade her children from studying music because she was afraid that they would become professional musicians, a traditionally difficult career fraught with penury. I despise her decision as it also eliminated a source of understanding and enrichment from her children's lives.
Then again, I get a little sad when I see someone with a lower lip piercing because I think, "that's one fewer sax player."
My mom played piano (she no longer does - I don't know why) and filled our house with music. If we wanted to play an instrument, we played it. If we wanted instruction, she found the most appropriate teachers. It worked well enough. I've played trumpet for 32 years and don't intend to stop. My oldest brother plays piano and is quite talented.
