21 November 2008

I am in tears of disappointment. [More:]

I applied for an internal vacancy at work, one for which I know I am well-suited and my manager gave me a glowing recommendation. There were several vacancies, and the sector in which I work needs these senior appointments more than any other area in the organisation.

I just heard that I haven't been short-listed. I really, really wanted this job.

There is nowhere else for me to go in this organisation. I am at the top of my grade, so no more decent pay increases (I got 1.2% last year, whereas people who are lower down the grades got between 5% and 10%).

I am so bitterly disappointed. I have asked HR for feedback as to why I've not been shortlisted. I have all the skills and experience they need, so it must be for some other reason.
So sorry dear :-(

Oh, damn, that sucks, ej!

*hug* *whuffle*

I hope they'll give you some real feedback. An HR-style brushoff will just add insult to injury.

fuck them, you're smarter than all of them put together. life is unfair like that. wait until this downturn is over then I'm sure you'll find a better company that understands you better.

One of my team-mates also applied. I won't know until Monday if she's got through to the next stage. She's been with the organisation a few years longer, but she's not legally qualified, and she had the whole of August off because of stress after having a bit of a meltdown in the office. So if she's got through then that's a clear message to me that my face doesn't fit.

((((EJ)))) and what matteo said. we could all come over in bunny suits and tell them you kick ass if that would help.

Aw, I'm sorry. You'll find something better, like folks have said.

WHAT! Who are these people???? Give us a list of email addresses and we'll set them straight! We the bunnies demand justice!

Sorry, EJ, I know how it feels, and it SUCKS. I really will set them straight if you let me.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I wish I could be there and give you a hug, I really do. I know that wishes are not optimal.

I hope you get feedback. It's good to know. I hope they don't decide that they shouldn't because of some sort of bullshit legal implications. Even if they rebuff your initial quest for the reason, I wouldn't give up. Keep trying. It's all probably going to have to be off the record.

So sorry. :-(

That really blows. That's one thing I hate about job searching/applying -- you never really know what's going on.

I'm going to get my ass to an AA meeting tonight. Not that I worry about drinking, but I've been alone all day in the house so I need to be around people tonight.

That's just weird... There has to be some explanation. Do you think it has anything to do with the occasional working from home? I know there was some weirdness about that at one point. This company really knows how to shoot itself in the foot; I really, really hope you will find a place that has the sense to appreciate you, and that you will be able to look back and laugh (or at least smirk).

The other woman in my team is part-time - 4 days a week - two of which she works from home. So if she's got through too it's not because I work from home 2 days a week.

Grrrrrr. I'm sorry. That truly sucks and I bet it hurts a lot. You deserve better and I hope that you are able to find a better work situation sometime soon. (((((hugs)))))

Oh Jan, as someone who was in this boat last year I completely sympathise.

What's more I feel angry on your behalf, not disappointed, just angry. You're clearly an incredibly competent and hard-working individual, plus you're just plain nice! I'm sure as a colleague you come across as you do to us.

I have no doubt that HR feedback will be yada-yada all boxes were ticked but the successful applicants were just more X. I', also convinced that sometime you'll find out the real reason which may be that someone felt threatened just because you're more competent.

(((((((((((Huge Hugs, honey)))))))))))) You DO NOT deserve this!

Awe, that sucks, ej. It's like this summer when I got all hopeful about transfering schools and only got one little nibble after sending out dozens of electronic resumes and cover letters (the Department of Ed. had an online system for transfers, which I'm not going to rely on next time). I was sure I'd get calls for interviews, but no dice.

For me, it may be my relatively higher salary. With rounds of budget cuts the last couple of years, principals have their eye on the bottom line. They're favoring new, less educated, less experienced teachers cause they're cheaper. Just wait till they get the state test scores for their students, dammit. They'll change their minds!

(If you maybe have a friend in the "higher-ups" or department you're interested in, maybe they could poke around for you, get some information unofficially? You never know, it may have nothing to do with you; they may be trying to stack things in favor of one of their friends or something. It's still a bummer, though, feeling stuck.)
