Farding? Am I the only person who has NEVER heard of this term before?
Nope. Count me among the ignorant.

I've never heard of it either.

Nope.

That's a relief.

"Gentlemen, where are your lovely wives this evening?"

"At the moment, they're upstairs in the powder room, farding up each other's faces."

So would one who overfarded be a candidate for a make-under?

Never heard of it. Under what context did it come up?

Never heard it.

Nope, and I have a rather large vocabulary.

Never, and I have a rather small vocabulary.

I recognise the French word but have never heard it used in English...

Wow, Janet, what kind of circles have you been hanging in? I've never encountered this before, though I do vaguely recall something like this in French. It makes more sense when you pronounce it with a French accent. Elle Fahhhhhhhhhh

Now I know what someone means if they ask to fard on my nose.

Oh, someone wanted to use it in a document here, and for our particular documents, it's not a good idea to use a word that nobody knows, but I wanted to make sure that it really isn't common or well-known. Plus which the potential for puns . . . . egad.

I only fard up my face on special occasions.

I've never heard it, and I'm an editor and I think I know all the cool obscure words (I definitely don't though).

I have seen it before, but then my vocabulary is about five times as large as the average person's no, I'm not kidding.

A quick search finds it may be obscure but has re-emerged to describe doing make-up in public, esp. in cars or trains. News story.

Put me in the "never" camp. What an ugly word.

I never heard it, and I don't like it, but next time I'm running late for something and The Boyfriend seems impatient I'll tell him I have to finish farding before we can go.

Nope, never heard of it, and I agree with rhapsodie - it's an ugly word for a beautifying procedure.

There's Farder Coram in His Dark Materials, but I've never heard of "fard".
posted by lukemeister 14 November | 22:55
I thought of "Who would these fardels bear?" but turns out that's from a different root. Never heard of farding.
