I just had a very bizarre interaction with my bank [E*trade] this morning. My account was locked but they wouldn't tell me why.

[me] Why is my account frozen?
[etrade] Something's wrong
[me] Yes I know but what?
[etrade] Can't tell you until you clear security.
[me] ok, here is my name, social, dob, mothers name, address, preferred salad dressing, favorite color. ok now tell me?
[etrade] no. I will now ask you random questions made up by the computer based on information gleaned about you from the public domain.
[me] really? Have you been reading my mecha posts?

I ended up driving to a physical branch in Palo Alto and turned out that I logged into my account on a trip to Milwaukee last month and that really upset the computer. bah.

We just got rid of our etrade account for just that sort of bizarre behavior. Also, they charge fees for everything, and it was not worth it compared to the other companies.

I was in a similar situation and the random questions came from all three major credit reports. If I hadn't known what wrong information was in my reports, I would have never got through the security questions.

Can I complain about Sprint here? Every month I go on line to pay all of my bills. Every month Sprint dot come rejects my user name (although I am using the exact one that is supposed to be my user name from the last time). Every month I have to re-set my user name with a *new* user name and password (by adding "1"s -- it's getting long). Every month the site crashes just as I try to log in with my newest username and password. This does not happen with any other bill site.
