Car vs House On my way home last night, I saw the result of a drunk driver plowing into the house of one of my neighbors (five houses down). The driver was in terrible emotional condition and one of my other neighbors had the situation well in hand so I didn't stop to be a first responder.

Took this picture this morning - the car had been taken away and their whole porch is gone.

Whoa. Our house was hit by a drunk when I was a kid. I was at the opposite corner and sitting on my bed (at the edge) -- the jolt knocked me to my floor. Our entire garage had to be jacked back into place from six inches off the foundation.

The guy had seen our neighbor's driveway (now property we own, where I'm typing from) and thought it was the street 80 feet farther away.

Other effects that continued were cracked 19th-century plaster walls that needed replacing, and a ceiling that eventually fell down completely, leaving 2nd-floor joists exposed. It can be a very traumatic event in the life of a house, even if nobody is injured.

Oh, there was a porch that got demolished similarly last year in our neighborhood -- again, I think somebody mistook a driveway for a street, as it wasn't like they were at the end of a T or anything. This year they have a whole new porch, and it's bigger! So there's that.
