Please not Biden Speculation on the cable re Biden as Obama's VP. Oh, please, no. He irritates me soooooo much. Such a full-of-himself asshat.
(I know his votes are good on lots of important issues, I just find him cringe-worthy.)

Do you mean, Joe "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy, I mean, that's a storybook, man." Biden? That cable crew must have been smoking some of my stash.

Cue "Obama Lands Biden" "jokes" from the right wing press.
posted by seanyboy 14 August | 06:08
I'd rather have Biden than Evan Bayh. Bayh not only supported the war, he helped instigate it, you might as well have Gingrich as VP.

All I know is McCain's running mate is going to be nicknamed "Iceman".

I'm hoping for Feingold or Kucinich. Because I live in goddamn fantasyland.

I would like a bumper sticker that says "Mohammed is my VP."

I'm still holding out for Bill Richardson ... or as I like to call him, Commander William T. Riker.
posted by grabbingsand 14 August | 08:41
Eric Shinseki would be a good choice.

I am into Brian Schwietzer but it doesn't seem likely.
At least we know for sure it won't be Edwards!

I don't know that Biden was wrong when he said that, Ardiril, but he sure said something you can't say publicly. I don't think he's an asshat so much as just too damned old school senatorial crossed with inveterate Sunday talker guest. He was never a really good campaigner and would probably only be there to buttress the "foreign policy expertise" perceived weakness.

I much prefer him to the Hagel/Bayh/etc. speculation, of course.

My choice would be Wes Clark, actually, but it seems he failed the "loose cannon" test a couple of months ago with that hit on McCain. (You wonder if someone burned him deliberately.) Our discourse does not allow for criticizing Republicans on military experience grounds. I don't know how you change that, but Wes just wasn't a big enough name to start to turn it around.

Almost all the VP possibilities depress me, either because they kinda suck (Biden) or because it's very unlikely they'll be picked (Richardson, Feingold). Clinton is starting to sound like a good compromise.

Whoever it is, rest assured it will be some stiff white guy.

I'll be pissed if he doesn't offer the nomination to Clinton. I get that he's not going to, and I get why he wouldn't want to, but I'm still pissed.

Oh, that would be delicious, no? I'd vote for that so hard.

Why on Earth would he? I'm truly stymied by the prospect. I'll be pissed if he does.

Clinton is still working against Obama. She's probably more effective than McCain is in sending votes away from the Democratic candidate. Even Maureen Dowd is coherent enough to point out what a disgrace she's become.

Don't worry. I won't forget where I came from.

Me, too, and I see both sides, whadda mess. Sigh.

Somehow Biden pushes my ugh-what-a-(white)dude buttons. So the combination of the Hillary stuff and the possibility of Biden, makes me feel sort of sidelined and discounted. Biden still gives me flashbacks to the Anita Hill hearings.

After how personal she made her campaign? I'd be floored if he did. She didn't run as "I'm better for the job," she ran as "he's unfit" which is no good when you're in the same party.

Rest assured that, no matter who Obama picks (besides Clinton), this is the ONLY story you'll hear...over and over and over again...beat into our heads. No matter whether it's the prevailing opinion or not (which I don't believe that it is), simply because it's a great story to stir shit with.
posted by ColdChef 14 August | 14:09
because it's a great story to stir shit with.

Yup. And moreso because it will take a disaster of epic proportions for Barack to lose, and the asshats in the media need to sell ad-time.
posted by ufez 14 August | 14:48
"a disaster of epic proportions"

Something the Democrats have shown repeatedly that they are quite capable of achieving without outside assistance. (Republicans too, but that's a different thread.)
posted by Ardiril 14 August | 15:14
It will not be Biden. Or Clinton or Clark, that's for sure. Tim Kaine seems the most likely to me. So far, I like what I see. Maybe Richardson for a cabinet post.
posted by Pips 14 August | 15:30
Obama is in a sticky situation. The closer the race becomes he might need Clinton. You can have your pie in the sky ideals but they don't mean anything if you can't win.

The good choice is Ed Rendell. He's not a Washington insider per se. He'll lock up Pennsylvania and appeal to the Clinton supporters. He was in lockstep with the Clintons and supported Sen. Clinton from day one.

LBJ accused JFK of having genetic diseases, that he fathered illegitimate children and other unflattering accusations. JFK knew what he needed to do to win. You can't make it personal.

I think that Clinton killed any chance of being VP by the way that she ran her campaign after Super Tuesday.
posted by octothorpe 14 August | 15:58
No please, not Rendell. He's good guy but he's way too much of a old-style east coast Democratic machine politician. There are bound to be way too many skeletons in his closet.
posted by octothorpe 14 August | 16:00
Tim Kaine is a nice guy, but no Washington experience, all State. He was a very prompt and personal mayor - I had some minor contact with him on a small time issue. Plus, he looks like he's had a face lift. Jim Webb, on the other hand, would have been a great choice, but he says he won't do it. I'd love to see the surprise drama of Webb up there. . .
posted by rainbaby 14 August | 16:26
I heart Chuck Hagel. I know, he's a Republican but he speaks sense. That would be an awesome ticket.
posted by LoriFLA 14 August | 16:33
I can't imagine that Clinton WANTS the Veep slot. And even though unlike MoDo and some other shit-stirrers I think she's behaved herself since conceding, she would still be a tremendous risk to an Obama administration.

Webb is another person who has some great positives but just would be congenitally unable to stay on message.

Rendell is one of those guys that only wonks (and people in his state) have heard of.

Somebody probably made good arrangements to get Edwards out of the way just in time. He's someone who would have been imperfect (especially as a second-time-around second), but had the possibility of being a less objectionable choice than many others. Anyway, I wonder who that was ...
posted by stilicho 14 August | 16:49
People don't know who Rendell is? Didn't they see that rapping-groundhog commercial?
posted by box 14 August | 16:53
Thanks box, I live in PA but I've never seen the Rappin' G-hog before.

Gore.

I heart Chuck Hagel. I know, he's a Republican but he speaks sense. That would be an awesome ticket.

It drives me nuts to hear Republican names thrown around for the Democratic ticket, it seems like such a fake gesture of inclusiveness- and maybe it's not, which is even worse. If I want a Republican in power, I will vote for one. Obama's gonna pick a Democrat in the end, and he's gonna do it because I say so, or I swear, I'm voting for McCain.

On preview: Gore! We saw Gore speak a few months ago at Radio City Music Hall, and during the Q&A period, questions about him possibly getting the nomination were floated (maybe questions about the VP slot, too, I can't remember), and he shut them down gracefully BUT left just enough room in his answers that were something to be thrown his way, he could snatch it up fast without seeming as though he was going back on what he said. I seem to recall that he said that he doubted it would happen, and I doubt it, too.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 14 August | 18:19
Yeah, Gore would never do it. It would be a step back for him, at this point. I could see Clinton as Secretary of State. On the presidential ticket she's a liability, not an asset. Independents who would otherwise go for Obama would go for McCain if Clinton was on the ticket, IMHO.

It'll be Kaine, I tells ya. Mark my words. The fact that he's a Washington "outsider," per se, works perfectly with Obama's message of Change. And they look good together. A little more foreign policy experience might be nice, but ya can't have everything.

(Plus, if I may be so bold, a white southerner has generally been good for the Democratic ticket.)

Bill Richardson all the way. He's good enough to be President, he's a very intelligent, seasoned person.

It would be a masterstroke on all fronts.

The fact that Bayh's name is even mentioned let alone in the running makes me want to poke my eyes out.
