Winner! Every year for the last 5 years my friends and I have a cake competition. I posted this Two years ago and Last year. Eurovision style rules & the winner gets a big gold crown and the chance to host it the year after. Last year I won, so this year we held it at my house.→[More:]
Now, it's the morning after, I've got a hangover and my house smells of cake ingredients & cream. It's not a good smell.

Rather amazingly though, I won for the second year in a row. I cooked Baklava. We had about 20 different cakes. I'm pretty sure though that some people don't try hard in order not to host the competition the year after. I call this the Irish Effect. However, there were some awesome cakes.

If I get photo's, I'll post them. But anyway - despite all that... I'm a winner. Yay. Two years in a row. If I win it again, I wonder if I get to keep the crown.

In a stunning coincidence, I lose. Yesterday I was overcome by a fierce cake longing (must be ESP), and eventually just decided to whip up a quick devilsfood cake with what I had around the house. Oil was a problem; I wondered, "use the old vegetable oil that's been sitting down in the cupboard for who knows how long? Or use olive oil, which seems strange and ucky? Or substitute butter?" I used the apparently elderly vegetable oil, and it came out AWFUL. Somehow the cake managed to come out tasting like sardines. Seriously.

So I reiterate, give me cake NOW!

Oh, taz, the pain! I did that recently, too, with a batch of oatmeal-cranberry bars. They weren't awful, but had a faint nose of old latex.

I immediately chucked the old oil and vowed to buy vegetable oil in smaller bottles from now on. We use it only for making popcorn and for the occasional cake or cookie for my butter-intolerant relative, so it sits there on the shelf, quietly turning evil.

Thanks everyone.

I ended up feeling pretty weird about winning two years in a row. It felt wrong somehow. Anyway - I have to do it all again next year. I think I'll do a Republic of Ireland and deliberately lose.
