20 July 2008

IT'S HOT You know that part in Sunday in the Park with George[More:] where Dot is posing in the park in a big dress, and it stays standing in one place while she frolics around in her underclothes? That's what I did at church today. Oh, you may have seen someone who looked like me standing up in the front in a robe, but that was just an illusion. The real me with laying flat on the cool tile in front of the fan.

How are the rest of you staying cool on this hot, hot Sunday?
I can't handle this heat and humidity. I have mostly hidden out in my apartment all weekend, which is air conditioned, but not air conditioned enough (my thermostat says it's 80 degrees in here). I just haven't been motivated to venture out for more than a few necessary errands. Also, my allergies have been AWFUL for days, so I'm spending a lot of time doped up on Benadryl.

My studio is huge with a medium sized AC. When I came back here from uptown it was 92 degrees and 52% humidity. With the AC on for three days it's now 85 degrees with 46% humidity. I think it's the humidity drop that makes it much more comfortable now.

We need some kind of heat averager. Summer has passed the UK by so far. Today - well, it's not raining, so that's something, but it's about 17 degrees (centigrade, you can do the conversion yourself if you need to) and windy. I'm cold :(

So my solution for those of you suffering the heat is to pipe some of our cold over.

Ugh, I am shut-in, and not looking forward to going out to see a friend do stand-up. It will not be cooler by 5pm.

alto, 17C sounds heavenly.

We went and bought groceries because our cupboard was bare. Now I am going to retire to the veranda with my beer and chips.

Not as bad here in the North East, as in NYC, but just as unpleasant. I think john has the right idea: sitting on the porch with something tall and cool. Mint Juleps, anyone? My treat.

Church was pretty darn hot here too today. They were handing out bamboo hand fans at the door but they didn't help much. No wonder so many other Unitarian churches traditionally close during the summer months.

It's started raining pretty hard now though which has cooled things down considerably. For some reason, I decided that it would be a good day to clean out the basement. The cats keep tracking dust up from the basement floor, so built a barrier to keep them out of the larger part of the basement and now need to clean the laundry room floor. Fun.

Beer sounds good but I forgot to buy any yesterday and no one around here is open on Sunday. It's not illegal anymore but few of the beer distributors bother to open unless there's a Steelers game.

Alcohol is contraindicated at times like these. You will only find yourself dehydrated on top of hot and sweaty.

There should be more swimming pools in New York City. Private ones that only I and maybe a few select MeChatters can access. For now, it's a cold bath or nothing.

Beer. Air conditioning. The Mad Men season one marathon. I think I'm doing okay.

I just embrace the heat.

Ahh. The storms dropped the temp down to 70 degrees and I'm sitting on the porch with a pop (not a beer alas) and enjoying the breeze.

The basement is as clean as I could get it without a bigger shop-vac. The height of the joists down there is only about 5'11" so I have to work stooped over which kills my back. I'll have to wait until I shrink a few inches in my old age before I can build a game room down there.

It's hot here. It's 95 degrees and humid as all get out. Yesterday I spent all day Boogie boarding (the waves were awesome) and sitting under an umbrella on the beach. Today we took a hike by the river and saw many manatees and wildlife. It helps to be in or near water. Without it I doubt I would be outside for long periods of time.

I am on the coast where its a pleasant 61. But the fog is driving me crazy.

Hot in Atlanta today (mid 90s F) but our humidity isn't bad at all compared to last weekend. We have the AC on, but may turn it off once the sun sets... it's supposed to get down to 70 tonight, and if the humidity stays low, that'll be fairly nice.

(I did get some clothes out to dry on the clothesline today, to take advantage of the heat!)

99 here in Little Rock. After I bring in this laundry (you're a man after my own heart, BP), I'm going to meet a pal at the bar.

I'm watching that, too. I hadn't seen it before. It's terrific. Boy, they drank a lot at work. I need to start doing that more.

(Thank heavens for a/c.)

Went down and sat on the sand next to the Atlantic Ocean and talked about a wide variety of shit with my Dad. The wind was coming off the water and cooled things down considerably. And there's something large to be said for sitting on the beach, squinting into the distance with your old man, talking over work and family and weather and sun and sand.

It's 84 in the living room right now. That doesn't sound so bad but I'm sitting here pouring sweat, ick. I floated down the river in a tiny yellow inflatable boat all afternoon and that was lovely.

My apartment is hot and I can't sleep. I want to turn on the a/c, but I feel too guilty after watching Al Gore on Meet the Press this morning.

The forecast high for today is 97F/36C (which will really be about 100, since it's hotter here than at the weather center), and 101F/38C tomorrow, which will be around 104 - 105F - and we have stuff to do tomorrow, since V. will either not work, or work at night, and the water company, for one, has sent a nastygram.

:( <--- this is my sad face. I'm okay up to 90F, and then I get really miserable. It's 8:30 am here now (monday) and already almost 90.

Here in NYC the outdoor temp bottoms out between 6 and 7 am. So I just opened all the windows and turned on the fans, shut off the a/c. The temp in here dropped to 82 F, but the humidity hopped up to 58%. Win a few lose a few.
