The most awesome thing you've seen recently? [More:]So, there I am, on my morning walk, when I sit down on the bench after I've completed half the way, and as I'm sitting there with people walking and jogging all around me, I see this big, beautiful streak of colour fly through the corner of my eye. At first, I'm scared out of my wits because I've never seen anything like it. It must've been over ten feet long from head to tail (kind of looked like a pre-historic bird of some sort), and just as I was about to scream out in terror (I'm not kidding), I realized what I was looking at--it was a big, beautiful Peacock, in all its fine glory. This was the first time I'd ever seen one of them fly. I think it's the Pea-hens that can't take off, whereas the Peacocks can at least glide for a certain distance. This one sure could, and at a good height too. I was lucky to have seen it, because no one else seemed to have as I looked around me to share the joy in what I had just chanced upon...
Oh, they definitely can fly, they just don't do it very often -- mainly when startled or looking for a safe roost. Many "residential" or park peacocks have had their wings clipped, or are kept under netting.

e.g. the Peafowl Report Newsletter has a story, To Clip or Not to Clip? (Only shows the headline.) And this wild peafowl feeder in Somerset ran, er, afoul of local busybodies, and was shocked to learn that farmers will clip peafowl wings to keep them on their property, something they couldn't bear (which is where the running afoul comes in).

My friend's precious baby. My fiance's face. An overturned shotglass declaring free drinks.

Yesterday morning, I'm outside work having a breakfast smoke, and I see this big, fat, metallic green beetle creeping across the patio. A dazzling emerald scarab. Worried he might be inadvertently stepped on before he reached his destination, I gingerly pinched him up, and gently dropped him into the landscaping's ivy ground cover.

And a frickin' lizard, a five-lined skink, dashes out of the undergrowth like a tiny raptor, and proceeds to chow down on my little late beetle-friend, making loud CHOMPCRACKCRUNCHing noises like it was a eating a mouthful of potato chips, looking right up at me the whole time, as if to say, "Oh thank you thank you!"

My beloved Meg, who won't be my girlfriend for very long.

Soon she'll be my fiancee.
