Old fashion fake out This story is so awesome. I can't wait until they make it into a movie. 'Cuz you know someone is gonna make it into a movie. 'Cuz it's that awesome.
Starring Penelope Cruz as Ingrid Betancourt

I don't know. I don't really believe the Colombian government any more than I believe ours. I doubt that they story is really that simple or clean.

Great story but I think that if if was made into a movie the FARC would be some unnamed swarthy group of men or some similarly unidentifiable dudes with vaguely eastern European or Russian accents. The soldiers would be American.

I dunno, octothorpe. Maybe they bought off some rebels? Still makes them look good.

In any case FARC severely misstepped with kidnapping Betancourt. I think it was the beginning of the end of any international sympathy they had.

In letters and interviews since her release, she has described a routine of cruelty that left her at many points without the will to live. Her captors chained her and others by the neck to trees. She rarely changed her clothes. Tropical diseases, long marches through the mountains and a lack of nutritious food eventually shriveled her to a thin post with stringy hair reaching her waist. -- The NYT

A lot of the abuses in the civil war were attributed, if not to FARC, then to the paramilitaries -- which have been shut down or severely reduced in influence this decade.

I still remember when they had 9 justice ministers in three years, one of them Monica de Greiff, the daughter of a former top judge, in her early thirties then -- who fled the country when her family was threatened (by drug traffickers, not FARC, but the two existed in a deadly embrace).
