Absence of Water: A photo series documenting closed and unused swimming pools around London. (My favorite.)
What a shame. Any reason why?

From underneath the first photo:

In the Thirties London's outdoor lidos were at the peak of their popularity. Gradually tastes have changed, resulting in a drop in attendances, leaving the pools uneconomical to run. Many fell into decay and many were demolished. Only a handful of pools remain today as a symbol of a bygone era.

Thanks, B.P.

I was curious where these are. From the photo filenames:
01: Moseley baths (Birmingham, not London)
02: Eltham Lido
03: Erith Pool
04: Bristol North baths (again, not London)
05: Marshall Street baths, Soho
06: Solihull pool (another not London)
07/08: Uxbridge Lido
09: Victoria baths, Manchester
10: Wealdstone open air baths

So that's only 5 places in London, but anyway.

I think the issue with all of them is lack of funding. There are quite a few places like these that are still open, but always with significant council subsidy or other kinds of grant.

I misinterpreted the text on the first page to mean they were all in or near London. Oh well.

Thanks BP. More info about closed pools from a favorite site.

These are beautiful shots. I would love to find some old pools or abandoned buildings to crawl around with my camera.

Some of them look as if they only lack water. Such as your favorite, BoPo. Such a beautiful building!
