Unequalled: Wanna hear some 60's British R&B pop? - They're probably best known for doing the original version of "Police On My Back", later covered by the Clash. Or the fact that they were fronted by Eddy Grant over a decade before he "rocked down to Electric Avenue". But the Equals were much more than that. [More:] They did straight ahead British rock/pop and occasionally veered into goofy bubblegum territory. And they made some great hard driving R&B, as seen in this cut, my personal fave.

Although they only managed to get a few albums out before slipping away, for me they were one of the best bands of the 60s. They had a few British chart hits, but seem to be a footnote in rock history.
Thanks Slack. I haven't listen to this stuff in a long time.

How strange, Eddy Grant was on the radio today choosing favourite tracks. He surprised me - he chose Midnight in Moscow by Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen, explaining that his dad had been a wicked trumpet player, and that the trumpet was his first instrument.

I love me some Equals. That's a band that should have been HUGE! "Soul Brother Clifford" is an excellent stomper as well, and "I Get So Excited," is one of the best portrayals of hormonal overload in music history.

I'd never heard of these, but I've always liked Eddy Grant's voice. Very cool!
