Airport security + Victoria's Secret Bustier = ?? [More:]
So I am thinking of wearing something like this (NSFW) and I'd like to get through the airport without hassle. Is it likely?

I am worried about the metal detector.

The bustier has some light boning but not as much as a corset and I don't know if it is made of metal or plastic (it's from Victoria's Secret but the material for the stays isn't listed on the tag.
There are also the metal hooks up the back and 4 little ones for the garters.

What say you?
Any similar experiences with this or other types of metal things?

I could just change into it after security but it's so complicated to get into, with the stockings etc that I don't really want to go through it all in a tiny gross airport bathroom.
Here you show up too late for Mudpuppie's interview apparel thread. . .

Well, normal bra hooks don't set off the detectors. Bustier hooks are just more of the same.

But how many is too many before the detector goes off and someone totally undeserving sees me in my skivvies? ;)

I wouldn't worry about it. I wear - and I am sure that millions of other women wear - an underwire bra through the detector and it's fine.

Maybe I am being too nervous about this, but do you think I could get through if I was wearing the equivalent of 4 bras with underwire?

From a corset-making website.

Q: So will I set off alarms at the airport wearing my corset that I made with your metal boning?

A: Metal detectors at airports are quite sensitive and will go off if you are wearing a metal boned corset. For time and convenience sake it would be recommended not to wear your metal boned corset when rushing to catch a flight. You may be detained and have your corset inspected, but at this time wearing a corset is still not considered a security risk and you will not be arrested!

It would appear that corset boning is plastic-coated metal.

From the TSA website: Airport metal detectors are extremely sensitive and may be set off by piercings, jewelry, metal boned corsets, underwire bras, metal binding materials, and many shoes.

It's going to depend on the airport. One of my college friends had a significant number of piercings, and it was a crapshoot whether he'd have to take them off or not.

I would suggest either putting it on after security, or leaving yourself plenty of time to be wanded and security-checked.

I've never had a bra set off the metal detectors, and I wear some heavy-duty boulder-holders. I would never wear a bustier or corset onto an airplane, but only because it takes 3+ hours to get anywhere from Alaska and I prefer comfortable travel.

However, I'm pretty sure the stays in this bustier are made of plastic because it is from Victoria's Secret. If I was going to wear a $200 corset, then I might be concerned about the amount of metal in it, but VS is more about the looking-pretty than the supporting-everything. I think you will be fine.

That depends. Will you be wearing anything else?

Ha, nice jonmc.
Thanks everyone. I stopped by VS on the way home from work and the lady said she thought they were plastic, so I think I'll risk it. I am always crazy early anyway, so I'll have time to get frisked and wanded. (Though the boy might be upset that other people get to do that first...)

I'll let you know how it goes on Friday (or I'll update to say that I've chickened out).
Yay underwear!

jonmc is dead right, frankly [well said]

There is no undergarment dress code while traveling. I mean, it's none of Airport Security's bidness. [wanna see my piercing — fyne. Let it set off whatever bells. ha./
Truthfully, I don't think you need to be concerned, do it. It's a free country, Right¿
one needs to prove it daily, to keep in the game.

I am always right, sir. The sooner you accept that, the better off you will be.

I have 4 pins and a plate in my ankle and they never set off the airport alarms.

it will potentially have a metal underwire and clips, the bones will be plastic. If they're metal I'll eat my sneakers. You won't see galvanized spiral steels or coated steels in anything that sells for under $200 or so.

But even beyond that, trust me, as someone who has made dozens of corsets in her life and three in the last week, just looking at it I can PROMISE you it'll be plastic.

Internal metal will very rarely set off the detectors, they have to be pretty high for that. I usually do, but I've got more metal than 99% of the people who have any surgical metal wandering around out there. just a couple screws or pins generally won't.

I have set off metal detector WANDS (after setting off the main one) with metal garter clips, though. Although I think Secrets In Lace is the only company still using metal clips as a standard, so you should be cool. Victorias Secret and Fredericks have been using plastic for at least my entire adult life.

You should be fine.

Thanks, kellydammit, yeah I am sure you're right and the bones are plastic.
I misspoke before, it's not the garter clips that are metal but the 4 adjustable strap slide thingies, plus the same ones on the bra straps and underwire and the back hooks. I think I will be ok. TSA be damned!

I've beeped with a (presumably) metal-boned (leather) corset. The advantage was that the corset was "dressy" enough I could just open my black blouse to show them what was underneath and still not feel naked. This was in Amsterdam, 1999 or so and during one of those special metal-wand searches that happened because I was also (daftly) wearing steel-toe boots that makes the detector go beep beep - so I'm not sure the corset or the boots were at fault.

These days I'm all sneakers, no fancy metal-bits and no belts when traveling. Can't stand being taken aside, I am every time still.
