Island Vacation Pride -- Part Deux! (the playlist) [More:] Okaaaay. So the mango juice is purchased, and the sham-pag-nee, for mango mimosas. My friend (who grew up in Hawaii) is bringing Kalua pork. I've ordered poke from the place Occiblu pointed out. I'm going to have bagels and cream cheese and tomatoes/avos/red onion and further toppings including fried spam. Plus fruit salad.

Now! The fun/hard part. The play list. I want to intersperse poppy pop songs (dance, mostly) with ridiculous "island" songs. So, for example, Pineapple Princess by Annette Funicello. Suggestions?

(PS If anyone wants to attend, email me for the evite.)
Anything by Don Ho, I would imagine.

Island Girl - Elton John
The Girl from Ipanema - Joćo Gilberto and Stan Getz (not really island specific but very tropical)
Anything by Martin Denny (Tiki lounge music)

Lots of post-punk/early new-wave disco has this silly, infectious tropical element to it.

A bunch of stuff on the ZE record label would qualify: Kid Creole & The Coconuts. Don Armando's Second Avenue Rhumba Band. Coati Mundi. Breakfast Club. The "Mutant Disco" and "Zetrospective" compilations will have this stuff. On a ZE-related funky note, the first two Was (Not Was) albums are primo.

Also, check out some of the later-period material on 2 Tone: Rhoda, Rico, The Friday Club. The "Checkered Past" compilation will make do.

It sounds like an awesome party. If I could find a cheap, last-minute way up from Los Angeles, I'd totally come.

Bali Hai by Martin Denny? A bit cheesy but it's got that tropical groove.

The Tiki Bar is Open might fit.

Also, any song from an album called "Tropical Brainstorm" has to be a keeper, no?

I think those 3 are all I got.

Calypso Blues - Nat King Cole's is probably the definitive one, but Marvin Gaye's isn't bad either.
Coconut - Harry Nilsson
Coconut Juice - Tyga
Kokomo - The Beach Boys
Islands in the Stream - Kenny Rogers/Dolly Parton

Oooh, this sounds fantastic, and I have no suggestions but I would like to express my sorrow that I'm all booked up.

Yeah, I'd love to attend this party. If I could find a cheap, last-minute way from Little Rock to San Francisco, I'd totally come.
