OMG CARP With our recent flooding, carp have been trying to use the riverside parking lots to get upstream.[More:]Local story here. What they do is muck around down by the riverwalk in what are basically flooded planting beds, and periodically they get enough energy to try to make it uphill. Vigorously swishing their tails back and forth, they manage to move up the asphalt where the river water is flowing down, and usually get 8 or 10 feet at a time. If they're on a shallow bit they can rest and try again, but most of them just get washed back down to the riverwalk area.

Follow-up to Wet, wet Wisconsin.
Holy carp!

Poor little fishes.

Wow, that's just crazy.

My friends in Madison tell me that the street right next to ours flooded pretty badly and that there were people using kayaks to go down the street.

I'm hoping my house is okay :(

High water levels have led my state to open some dams to drain the man-made lakes. Problem is that some of those lakes have some serious trout predators in them, and the rivers they've dumped into are some of the best trout fishing streams in the world, so it's like a smorgasbord for the fish and really crappy for fishing and tourism. So the state has periodically been sending people out to electrocute the water to stun all the fish so they float to the top, then go collect all of those predators and take them back to the lakes. It's like a really weird electroshock version of Whack-A-Mole.

Heh, Sil, all that water in Madison will eventually come my way. ;-) (Via the Yahara River to the Rock.) Hope your house is OK -- I'm up the hill from all this, fortunately.

mudpuppie, they're actually doing fine -- very few actually get stranded.

Well, they're obviously doing better than you are. The flood waters are making you schizo!

I am large, and I contain multitudes. And I stay logged in as dhartung at that other computer because it pleaseth me to be ever so slightly unpredictable.

(I take what I can get.)

Good news is that the river has finally officially crested. Maybe in a week or so we'll have our major closed bridge open again (traffic has been horrendous).

Dude, you should be extra careful around these carps, since they can be very dangerous.

Thank goodness there is a thin khaki line between us and them:
