09 June 2008

I just found out that my kittens' siblings were abandoned on the SPCA's doorstep. I adopted Mint and Clover through my coworker's classmate 3 weeks ago. Today, when that coworker arrived at work, she told me that she'd talked to him on Friday and found out that he hasn't been able to find homes for 3 of the remaining kittens. (I've been asking around and posting ads, too, with no luck.) He left them in a box at the Sacramento SPCA's doorstep. They just turned 9 weeks old.[More:]

I'm worried, disappointed, and frustrated--if I'd known that he wasn't willing or able to keep the kittens any longer, I would have made the 1/2hr trip to take them off his hands and paid the SPCA fees myself. The SPCA is closed on Mondays, so I'll call tomorrow to ask if they found the kittens. Meanwhile, I've emailed the guy and I'm hoping to get the whole story from him.
Gah, I forgot to use [more inside]! Can someone fix this? Please?

WTF? They were left outside on a day when he knew the SPCA was closed?

Mint and Clover are so very cute.

Dumping the remaining kitties on a day he knew the place was closed is bad.

Grrrr... he just dropped them off when they were closed, probably without food, water, and any degree of protection? WTF? I don't know this person's circumstances but I guess being responsible enough to go when they were actually OPEN was just too big of a challenge.

I don't think s/he's saying he dropped them off there on a day it was closed. I think s/he's saying she found out he brought them there on a day it was closed.

Some people do the most inhuman things....

Let's hope the kitties were found by the staff who are on duty when the shelter is closed. Folks have to go in even on off days to look after the critters they have in place.

I think he dropped them off after they closed at night. Hopefully they were taken in the next morning, since the SPCA is open Tuesday-Sunday. According to my coworker, he gave up their mom as well. She's an outdoor cat, so if they managed to escape from the box, at least the kittens have her to depend on.

I suspect he couldn't afford the $30 surrendering fee for 4 cats. Like I said above, I would have been willing to pay those fees, even though I'm not exactly rolling in cash myself.

I guess it's much better than dumping them in the woods or the "country". I can't tell you how many animals have turned up at my aunt and uncles' farm over the years, because people can't care for them and somehow think they'll be better off "in the country". It's how their farm got infected with Feline Leukemia.
