Recap: Sexism in the US presidential race Seeing all these clips together in one video reminded me why it's nice to have a limited exposure to US media...how do these people still have TV shows?
I remember watching the Pat Buchanan clip live. I was thinking, "Oh, Pat stop talking."
Chris Matthews is the worst, besides the idiotic Fox guests and hosts. Matthews is very entertaining and intelligent but sometimes you wonder if he has a brain in his head.
I will say I am kind of shocked Tucker Carlson would say such a thing about women in congress. What an asshole. He no longer has his own show, but is a guest commentator.
To say something that idiotic is maddening. Unfortunately, female candidates are unable to raise enough money to run a decent campaign because people like him are unwilling to donate to a woman's campaign.
Not at all to be dismissive, but Chris Matthews, Tucker Carlson, Pat "Heil Hitler" Buchanan, Michelle "God I wish I were Ann Coulter" Malkin, the Joe Scarborough people, and of course the cavalcade of bigoted douchenozzles at Fox News comprise nearly all of this.
Which is to say that sexism certainly exists and is endemic in the media (as is racism, I believe), but this is not the best sample for discussing it. Most of these guys preach to the choir, a choir of chauvinists who wouldn't piss on Hillary Clinton if she were on fire, much less vote for her. What these unrepentant cockmouths are saying is of course misogynist and reprehensible and makes me absolutely goddamn weep for my country (and my state, and my in-laws, faithful Fox viewers), but there's a more subtle and insidious type of bigotry that runs in mainstream news media and doesn't bear the painfully obvious Limbaugh stamp, and that's the sort of thing that troubles me far more than these drooling knuckle-draggers..
These TV personalities pale before the radio call-in shows. They are still on the air because a) they sell car insurance, and b) Freedom of Speech in the US is balanced by recourse to libel lawsuits.
In all fairness, Pat Buchanan is as racist as he is sexist. He's an equal opportunity douchebag. (I have $50 riding on him slipping up and dropping an n-bomb on live TV between now and November. I make jokes because it keeps me from crying under my bed about him still getting a paycheck.)
Tucker Carlson is a jerk, and John Stewart almost made him cry.
Chris Matthews pissed me off a lot, too, although he's been anti-Clinton for years, and has the most right slant of anyone on MSNBC, so I can't say I'm shocked by a lot of his nonsense. this was awesome, though
I just watch
Meet the Press a lot, since it really seems to be the gold standard of tv politics.
If anyone drops the n-bomb, it probably will not be a slip-up but deliberate and scripted. I expect that on conservative blogs, POTUS will be replaced by NITWH. I think the deliberate, public misogyny of the primaries was an indication of the racism about to go on display for the election. This is going to get really ugly, the US could very well become even more polarized, and Obama will get no mercy for winning.
