Walthamstow Stadium is a fabulous piece of Art Deco, and it's closing in August after 75 years. The site has been sold to developers, so it'll become more horrid flats that nobody in the area can afford to buy. I hope they keep the Deco frontage. That neon sign can be seen for miles from the North Circular. The future for many of the dogs who race there is uncertain.
There are some more photos of the stadium here, towards the end of the set.
We had a great night there, except I lost money. chrismear won actual paper money. The rest of us won only coins, as the minimum bet is very small to start with.
The fall of greyhound racing going back to at least the 90s is kind of interesting. Apparently, greyhounds are far more reliable from a betting standpoint than horses. Plus, if you can find out which kennel has de-wormed its dogs, you can gain a big advantage. So while I imagine the behind-the-scenes money of the horse racing industry accounts for its health, it's a somewhat odd twist of fate that greyhound tracks can't even get betters involved these days.
