So I went to another anime con and I took some pictures, for your viewing enjoyment!
I love them all. But this one is my favorite.

Yeah, and she's not even all that young. That woman's a mom - she had a critter running around somewhere! Mad props!

It is a strange and wonderful world we live in.

Very cool, all.

I'm intrigued by this one; do you know what the referent is?

I'm guessing it's a generic Gothic Lolita. I asked her about the skull on her collar - it's a chicken.

Hey pie - been a while. Cool pix! (on a brief overview - will look closer later.)

Everybody is so willing to have their picture taken! Cool set. I'm intrigued with this person, myself. Or that outfit. Character. Something. She's Alice In Wonderlandy.

Wow. I now see the connection between Anime and fetishism. And I can't decide if I think posing in this outfit next to squirting jets of white water is appropriate or inappropriate or inappropriately appropriate?

Oooohhhh my. Cosplay girls. Thanks for adding a hot and bothered element to my day.

Did you get any phone #s?
;-)
(From the ones who are obviously of age, of course.)

I'm guessing it's a generic Gothic Lolita.

Isn't there this whole hot new anime movie that's a Victorian romance now, too? I saw it advertised in Giant Robot or Juxtapose.

The one taz linked to is my favourite with this as a close runner-up:

It looks like just about anything goes at one of these shows. There were even a couple storm troopers. Is that the case, pie?

deborah, Yeah, while it's an anime con, other stuff is always there. At Sakuracon in Seattle, I found a longcat. The presence ofinternet memes has really exploded of late.

shane, Is this what you're thinking about? I've watched the anime and bought the manga. Considering that I was already an Anglophile, I was amazed that I actually learned bits of historical trivia about Victorian England from it. I also love romance manga.

Interesting pics. I simply can't believe that self-respecting people go out in public dressed so outlandishly.

...then again...

To each is own, I guess! ;)

'is own...

...his own...

Meh.

Do the girls usually outnumber the guys so heavily -- or is it just that the girls dress better and/or are more willing to have their pictures taken?

Wow, some of those have a ton of work put into them.
This one must've taken them ages. (They look like Slayers, is that accurate?)

Who would you get to build a sword that big and light? At least you'd always get a seat on the bus. Great set, pie!

Treepour, there were plenty of guys there, but, for some reason, I felt less compelled to photograph them. Also, I think more of the main characters in these shows tend to be female.

Zack_Replica: That looks like Magic Knight Rayearth to me, but I could be wrong because the hair is different. Also, the better costumers also create their own props out of non-metal materials, so any good costumer would be able to make props to match.

Ah, I see. I'm so out of the anime loop. Used to watch tons of it, but after a while the parts that were too saccharine really got to me. I loved Ranma 1/2 until they put in the old man with the underwear fetish, and while I think Evangelion was good, it really needed editing to remove a lot of the annoying backstories (I'm *so* sorry you were taunted at school but do you have to keep having 20-minute-long flashbacks about it? geez). I haven't got around to watching X or Hellsing yet (I mention those just because they look like they may have potential), and I'm hoping there's no cute animal/sidekick/child/alien in them because that always makes me want to chuck the show in the garbage.

Having said all that negative stuff, I thought the Appleseed movie was amazing, and I liked Ghost in the Shell and Naruto is fun, bar the flashbacks. Any pointers to what anyone thinks is good anime would be welcome.
posted by Zack_Replica 01 June | 12:57
Really? I saw the all CG Appleseed movie, and thought it was like watching somebody play on the playstation for an hour and a half. As for good stuff, I think the cream of the crop are the shows worked on by Yoshitoshi Abe. Of course, a lot of the shows I like are from the David Lynch school of anime.
