AskMeCha: Edible parts of rhubarb? [More:]So we got delivery of someone's country-house rhubarb en masse. We got everything -- leaves, stalks, seedstalks and seedpods.

We know the leaves have the oxalic acid, and have no use for the seeds. (We have some of our own rhubarb plants that have been producing poorly the last few years and probably need dividing.) I understand most rhubarb seeds don't result in plants ever or if they do not right away.

My question is about a) the big hollow seedstalks themselves, and b) the leaves poking out of one. My mother says both a) and b) are inedible. I say a) is inedible, but there's no reason that b) is, since they're basically the same as leaves directly from the roots as far as I can tell.

I guess there's c) which is that all of the stalks we got out of this trunk-full of greenery amount to about one rhubarb pie, and they're all pretty green, which means they may not be as flavorful as we normally are used to anyway.

Please hope me, administrator master gardeners!
I thought the leaves were poisonous no matter which portion of the plant they came from.

I'm translating this in my head (master rhubarb pie maker if I may say so myself) and .. Uhm. Not quite following here.

Green: Not neccisarily bad, just often tart - but this totally depends on the variety of rhubard, some just are green all the time. Red is better of course but I often use one red and twenty greens in my boilings, green isn't bad if the thickness (ie; level of maturity) seems right.

Hollow seedstalks? Don't eat! Leaves poking out? Right get rid of the leaves they're poison (for real) but if a stalk is a stalk, then it's a stalk I always say. Even if it's growing out of another stalk. See what I mean? (It doesn't happen too often though) - so in conclusion, eat all the stuff that looks like a proper leaf stalk, compost everything else. (or plant it!)

Here's a helpful image - remove this before boiling:

(I realize that my English makes no sense - by stalk I mean 'root' or like the part of a tree that's stuck in the ground and before branching, geddit? That's edible - branches have leaves and are not.)

(and yeah sometimes you'll have two stalks growing out of the same place so to speak they are both edible but the branches are not - that image said it so much better than me, I'll shut up now)

A stalk is a stalk makes sense to me! I'll tell my mother a Swede told me so, that might help. ;-)

And oh, yes, the compost pile will welcome those seedstalks.

I realize now I said "leaves" for b) instead of "leafstalks", that was what confused heeeraldo. There is no intention of eating actual leaves, just the "branches" that supported them.

Yup that confused me too, throw those away. Good for compost.

Might want to try and plant some anyway, if it's a different sort than the one you have growing already. Rhubarhb's are a competitive plant, put a new one close to a withering one and the withering starts kicking ass again. (this is not based on scientific fact, just something that I've noticed.)

or yeah, that "Dividing" thing you said though I've never actually done that so I'm not sure what that means. Maybe that's what I've been doing?

That's when you dig up the root, split it up, and replant. Works the same with hostas and such.
