Mecha Poll: Worst British accent done by US actor? - inspired by linked post. I can't really judge, but was Renée Zellweger any good in Bridget Jones' diary(s)?
I thought she got the middle-class young woman's accent off pretty well.

I recall Keanu Reeves doing a pretty bad British accent, but I don't remember what movie it was. That's probably for the better.

I can never watch him in a movie without seeing an old schoolmate of mine who is the spitting image of him. Makes it pretty funny since his roles are a lot like the phases this mate goes through too. :))

What about Gwyneth Palthrow in Sliding Doors? I mean I know her accent is a million times better than mine, but I'm not sure it passes for 'local'. Did it? (I don't think I have the ears to judge)

I thought this had been settled years ago: Dick Van Dyke.

He was trying to sound british? Oh man, my childhood is now crushed. Yes that was awful, I thought they were just being fairtytale-wonderland though.

I understand your confusion.

I'm going to have to stock up on all these films again, anyone remember shitty-shitty-bang-bang? I think I can still sing all of those songs!

Slack, that was in that Dracula movie with Gary Oldman and Winona and Anthony Hopkins. Maybe directed by Coppola? It was the first thing I thought of when I read the title of this thread. His accent would go away, come back, go away...It was really annoying.

I remember reading a review of Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing which featured this gem: "As for Keanu Reeves, he takes off his shirt really well. Shame about the acting, though". I think that holds true to this very day.

Wait, wasn't Keanu in that as well? omg this thread has become six degrees of Keanu!

Slightly off-topic, but it was fun watching Christopher Lambert impersonate a Scotsman with a thick French accent while Sean Connery played an Egyptian by way of Spain with a brogue in the original Highlander film. Linguistic borderline personality disorder, that one.

Of course! LOL.

That's OK. Look how I spelled "referencing".

I think Dick Van Dyke's Mary Poppins accent wwas my barometer for British accents when I was little. REAL British accents sounded fake to me for a few years.

bmarkey - I love that quote about Keanu!

I think James Coburn has to be the master of terrible accents.

I've probably seen The Great Escape about a hundred times and yet I only realised a few months ago that he was playing an Australian.

If I remember correctly he also plays an Irishman in Fistful of Dynamite. Dear oh dear.

Talking about Gwyneth: I've never really liked her in anything I've seen her in because she's always seemed so stiff. After seeing Iron Man I think the stiffness might come from doing that bloody accent all the time. I found American Gwyneth to be much more likeable.

IIRC, Winona F. Ryder does a crappy English accent in Dracula, too, though it may have paled next to Keanu's. All through that movie I remember thinking that perhaps he thought he was in Bill and Ted's Transylvanian Adventure.

bmarkey, that quote made me laugh and laugh. Thank you.

Mary Reilly was panned when it came out--and Julia Roberts' and John Malkovich's accents DID stink, but other than that I liked it.
