Can you satisfy a little curiosity for me? (Wsht! Don't click that if scrawniness be offendin' ye.) What I'm curious about is what emotion you read from that picture.
Looks to me like sort of a playful challenge. He's saying, "Come get some!" but at the same time he's laughing about it, probably horsing around with friends or something.

Acid-fueled hilarity.

I had a similar reaction as BoPo.

Sweet, a two-fer.

Actually, upon reading tr33hgr's response, I can see the edge to the expression which he is identifying.

Playful "fuck you" enthusiasm.

The hands say Rock! but the eyes have a look of absolute fear.

Playful anger? Or maybe he's about to rawk.

I think it's "I'm drunk and awesome!.... oh wait, I might look a little silly""

(Perhaps that should be "Let's Rock!")

looks to me like he's thinking "I need some blood!" but that could just be cos I'm writing an essay on vampires.

And no-one else wanted to play. (Seriously, those were the first words that popped into my head; the links explain why.) On further examination, what BP said, with a definite possibility of drugs in the mix.

I'm reading that as "pumped" or "stoked," with a possible side-order of "lightly stoned" or "tweaked."

I'd never seen that photo before, elizard... that is brilliant. :)

I see "Oh shit, I'm being a dork and he's got a camera!"

Looks to me like your trying out your Iggy Pop costume (or lack thereof) for Halloween.

This. I couldn't think of how to say it earlier.

Anxious, whilst attempting to show some moxie.

But really, his eyes say it all. "I look like an idiot. I'm not wearing a shirt. Please don't take this picture. Whatever you do, don't ever show this photo to anyone. Yes, okay, I'm posing and I'll do what you say, but God in heaven above, someone please destroy that camera right now."

What were you going for or what do you see Wolfdog?
posted by rainbaby 29 May | 18:40
I can't really answer the question, Wolfdog, because I met you once, and that colors my responses, so I'm really curious as to what brought this on. It's an evocative picture. Up to you to share, of course.

What BoPo said.

Yeah, of all the Diane Arbus photos I've seen, it's my favourite. Glad you like it, too. Wolfdog's looks like a re-enactment, no?
posted by elizard 29 May | 22:27
rainbaby, what I saw was ambiguity - actually, almost a Necker cube-like flip in how I would see it from one moment to the next. I find little quirks of perception like that intriguing, which is why I was curious. Plus it's just always fun seeing how different people read something that is ambiguous.

The picture elizard posted creeps me right the hell out, and that's a phrase I hardly ever use. If I were in a room with that photo I would take it off the wall, turn it face down, and put a towel over it.

Possibly amusing little detail that was cropped out of the upper left corner and could conceivably color one's perceptions of the whole scene somewhat differently.

I have never heard this Cat Stevens song before. || I am having one of those out of the blue, massive, inexplicible anxiety attacks.
