Woman spends 60 years in Iron Lung. Dies during power failure. [More:]

This story is so sad. Can you imagine spending your entire life on your back, unable to scratch your nose or cross your legs? Sixty years. Wow.
The story also has a good explanation of how iron lungs work, which I never really knew (or wondered) about.

It IS sad. And it begs a lot of questions.

Worst thing is, they had all this technology they were using -- albeit old technology -- to keep her alive, and she died because the power went out.

In a 2001 interview with The Associated Press, she said she wanted to show children, especially those with physical disabilities, that they should never give up. "It's amazing what you can accomplish if you see someone do the same thing," she said.

Wow. What an inspiration.

When I was in Washington DC in 2005 the Smithsonian had a polio exhibit. What ever happened to Polio? It was excellent. There was an iron lung machine.

Very sad about Ms. Odell. It's hard to imagine that she lived in the machine from age 3.
