Tasmanian Devil Endangered ..."as a result of a deadly and disfiguring cancer outbreak." Sorry for the downer, but, WOW. "The disease, a fast-growing head tumor which spreads over the marsupial's face and mouth and prevents it from eating, often killing it within months, has cut the island's devil population in the wild by as much as 60 percent." Wow. Just Wow. Signs of the end? Screwed up ol' world, in'nit?

(I named my Isuzu Amigo "Taz". Well, he came on the mudflaps.)

Yeah, unfortunately this isn't news -- it's been happening for a while now.

Devil facial tumor disease -- 'pedia

In better and somewhat complementary Tasmanian extinction news, scientists have recently successfully transferred Tasmanian tiger DNA to a mouse. Maybe on some future Isla Nubla ...

And related to that, back to your downer note, is this not one of the saddest YouTubes? It looks content enough, but it was the. very. last. one. It was 1933, how could we have been so dumb as to let this happen? I know, I know. Visit ye polar bears while ye can.

There's a really great article in a recent issue of Harper's about this - I read it early April, I think.

Yikes. I'd be worried about that cancer spreading to other species.

Geez. That's sad. You know what I think about that?

Yeah, it's a sad state of affairs, all right. Scientists are working hard to find a cure, but don't seem confident of doing so before they become extinct :-(
