Help me explain to my girlfrieds why we can't name our nacent blog Underwire [More:] or The Underwire, or a variation upon such spellings.

This is already looking like a bad idear.

Also, metachat has done so much for me. But what have you done for me lately? Ha, I kid. But I turn for advice again. They just don't get that it's done to death and if and when anyone tried to find us, they couldn't.

Or maybe I'm wrong. Tell me, I can take it. Of course I don't think I am!
What's the content of this nascent blog?

(A brief Google points out that Wired Mag has an "underwire blog". . .)

That's the blessing and the curse of a name like 'Underwire'--it gets people's hopes up.

I don't see why you can't.

Yeah, Wired dominates the google.

Content - women, funny, profane, south, multiple posters, friends.

Fine, ok, you could do that with a wierd spelling of underwire.

BUT long term, we might have material and presence enough to do a performance using the collected over time blog material. So it's not just naming a blog, it's naming an overweaning project/entity. Potentially. So yeah, something a little hope getting up would be nice, but this is just too allready out there. That's what I think.

Blame Wired.com. They're already using it. And you can't have Alt Text (Lore's Column) or WebMonkey either.

And have an alternate name to suggest like Tech Support Garment.

Poked Underwire as a compromise? Or Popped Underwire?

Or maybe the Prickling-The-Dano-Voodoo-Doll-In-The-Crotch-With-A-Poked-Through-Underwire-Because-He-Is-Freaky-Like-That blog?

Ok, this is gonna be wierd, coming from me.... Ahem. But why must femmes point out their femme-ness when they do something like blog together or start a gaming-klan? It really turns me right off.

(I guess it's because I figure we're all humans, first, girls second. I didn't even name a community for sufferers of a specific illness that only women can have anything girly so that the husbands/boyfriends/SO's of sufferers would know that they we're welcome in the support group too. They sat at the SO's table though, however, as thir need of support was different [there were SO's that were girls in there too, btw, and someone's teenage kids.)

Good question, dabitch. It's a reclamation/community building thing, to be vague about it. We don't want to exclude men at all, but the feeling of needing a forum grew out of some gender stuff going on - some of the women are stand-up comics who've done a lot of sitting down behind the boys.

I'm certainly not limited to a gender defining name, but I'm not opposed to it, and some people really want it.

I've beaten them into submission - the ones who still care are coming up with some good stuff.

It has to do with carving out space in areas that are traditionally male-dominated. It's rather common in lots of spheres, actually, from the Society of Women Engineers to luncheons for female senators/representatives only.

Oh, right. Yeah I can see that makes sense. I guess I never did because when I was building my own treehouse* as they boys didn't let me in theirs, all the other girls were still playing with dolls. Thusly: treehouse open to all the geeks!

* note, not really talking about a treehouse here. ;P

MSN used to have a women's community named Underwire. I figure that's enough of a reason to avoid it.

Underwire is so dead. Whew. I am voting for the most gender neutral and most unique in terms of not on the web suggestion, but we'll see.
