Parking my iTunes Library? My employer announced that, during the next several weekends, they will be coming around and "inventorying" all the software on our machines.[More:]

Since I have developed the habit of keeping iTunes, and my most extensive library of songs, here, I am wondering if I can just move all of it to a zip drive, for the duration, and then put it back on, one the dust clears.

I don't even know if I am breaking any rules by keeping this stuff on my computer but I would rather not deal with asking, or telling.

Is it possible to just move it to a portable drive, then move it back?

Thanks.
I've done exactly that -- moving my library to an external HD and then moving it back.

Yes.

You'll need to move your library (c:\documents and settings\My Documents\My Music\iTunes) to the removable media and uninstall iTunes.
After they've gone, reinstall iTunes and move the folder back.

You are almost certainly breaking any number of rules (and laws) by keeping copies of song on your HDD - if you don't already have another copy, you should make one, because the "inventory" will most likely lead to the removal of your music and, probably, iTunes.

My employer does this sort of thing too, except that they don't bother with the inventory thing - they just re-image machines without warning.

If you don't have access to another drive, can you zip the files up in batches and send them to a GMail account?
