Nosey the Leech: Bloodletting for Londoners! [More:]
I am on the Hunterian Museum's mailing list, and while this might be a bit spammy, it's a free event that I can't attend (as I'm in Latvia), but perhaps you can! And take photos!

Here's the thing they sent me:

***The Barber Surgeon: leeches, lancets and bloodletting***

Saturday 31 May, at 12 noon and 2pm

Family friendly event

FREE, booking essential

A chance to see a performance by the Barber Surgeon, back by popular demand for one day only!

Come and meet Rory McCreadie, a Barber Surgeon who would have worked in the 16th and 17th centuries. Find out about the operations he performed at a time when hygiene was poor and pain relief unheard of. Rory will explain how trephining (drilling a hole in your skull) was used to release evil spirits and show you the instruments used for the most dangerous operation performed at the time. Rory will also demonstrate blood letting, giving you all a chance to meet Nosey the Leech!

Suitable for all ages, audience participation encouraged by children and grown-ups! Free to all, but booking in advance is essential. To book call the Hunterian Museum on 020 7869 6560 or email museums@rcseng.ac.uk with your full contact details and how many tickets you require.

Any takers?!
I'm just not sure that "Nosey" is the best name for the leech. I keep getting mental images of a leech in someone's nose, and that's not nice at all. In fact, my nose is squirming.

The Hunterian looks fabulous, and it sounds like a fun event... but do we have anyone in Glasgow? Grace is in Edinburgh, right?

The Hugh Mercer Apothecary in Fredericksburg keeps live leeches--apparently they can go without eating for some time.

Ah. I don't know why I thought Edinburgh. Did she ever live in Edinburgh?

Ehm.......... the Hunterian museum he mentions is the one in London. (The number given is the London one)
The whole Edinburgh/Glasgow thing had me scratching my head for a while there....

The light is now shining in head. I was confused, since my googling showed the Glasgow museum. Of cours "Londoners" in the heading should have tipped me off, but I guess I managed to overlook that giant clue.
