Five Demerits to ThePinkSuperhero for failing to title her AskMe question "How is Babby Name Formed?" Please thrash her here. [More:]

Or else tell us a bad baby name story. I've been having some fun looking at the Baby's Named a Bad, Bad Thing site linked in the comments.
From the BNABBT site, a reader writes:

I was calling in our town to ask people to sign a petition. One of the names on my list was "Mr. Odor". Not wanting to offend, I asked if I could speak to Mr. Oh-dor (trying to stress the "oh"). He said, "No, it's "odor" like a smell." I told him I could understand his having to explain, my maiden name was Herford, which is a type of cow. He told me, "That's nothing. My first name is Ivan!" Ivan Odor. How mean was that?

And the site owner says, yes - she looked him up in the white pages, and he's there, in the same area as the reader who wrote in... so True Story. Bad combos are my favorites... the insanity that goes on with silly first names knows no limits, but the true art is in the one-two combo punch.

I can do no better than to link back to this.

If they had gone ahead with naming her "Labia" they could have delivered the coup de grāce by marrying her off to Ivan Odor.

You can always tell who's full of shit if, during a conversation about names, they mention that they went to school with two girls name "lemonjello" and "orangejello". Also "Crystal Shandra Lear".

I just read on that site about Shanda Lear, daughter of Bill Lear of Lear Jet Corp. So, at least she is real.

What p&c said, and that goes double for their cousin "Shithead" (pronounced Sha-theed)

Sometime ago in Lilith someone described how her five year old pointed towards her crotch while bathing and wanted to know what it was called. Her response: "Vulva. That would be a pretty name for a girl."

Another person writing on the BNABBT site says "There was a Kaliope (which I HOPE was calliope)" but she's wrong there. This is just a regular non-weird Greek name (and one of the muses, of course), and is spelled properly as far as transliterated spelling would have it. Pronounced Kal-ee-OH-pee.

I can't find the Kath and Kim clip where they're choosing a baby name online, but if you ever get a chance to watch it, do:

Kim is contemplating baby names - her choices include Tiramisu and Typhphaanniii. Kath has "better options" - Winona, Paloma, Papilloma and Epponni Rae. Sharon's suggestions include Tailuh, while Brett is hoping the baby is a boy so it can be named Murray (from here, and hilarious).

They settle on Epponnee-Raelene Kathlene Darlene Charlene Craig.

I went to church with a Candida, which is actually a lovely name but rather unfortunate. My all-time favourite name among my childhood friends was Portia Klio Andromeda Herbert-Funk, and there was some stiff competition: Rainee Webber, Misty Day, Leaf Rose Green.

I went to a kids' ballet school recital a few years ago and all of the younger girls (5-6yo) had these silly made-up misspelled names. Reading the program was like reading the Saturday night lineup at the Kitten Klub.

Anything for you, dear.

Meanwhile, I'm still dying to know where Madison, Ava, and Isabella came from. Some movie?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero 12 May | 09:28
Ava Gardner was a movie star Barefoot Contessa who was married to Sinatra at one point.
posted by brujita 12 May | 09:29
Madison was from "Splash."

There was that whole 1940s push for a bit, in 2001 or so? Which might have brought in Ava (Gardner) and Isabella (Rosselini). But that one's just a guess.

Also, while thinking about "recycling" names, I thought about family names. I had a grandmother named Evelyn, and I thought about how I might update it, and came up with "Eva" or "Ava." So maybe some of that's going on -- people are taking syllables or feelings from family names and reorganizing them?
posted by occhiblu 12 May | 09:37
Oops, sorry, obviously Isabella Rossellini wasn't doing movies in the 40s. But her parents were, which is why the name came to me, I think.

Anyway. I'll go back to lurking until the caffeine kicks in. :-)

I think there was a character on Days of Our Lives named Isabella. I could be completely wrong. I really think that is where the K names came about in the last 10 years or so. Kayla, Kylie, Kaitlin, etc. Wasn't there a Kayla on Days of Our Lives? I have no idea where Madison came from. Madison Avenue? Madison, Wisconsin? James Madison? Dolly Madison? ;-) I know a ton of kids with the name Madison.

I chose names that I liked, but I did not worry too much about the names being unique. I'm generally against "unique", trendy names.

the name "Madison" makes me think of Darryl Hannah in Splash.
posted by amro 12 May | 11:24
I'm generally against "unique" trendy names, too, LoriFLA- I was reading a summary article about the 2007 names data, did you know there are enough people who name their kid "Messiah" that it showed up on the list? #723. Wonder if those kids develop complexes ;-) I'm a fan of classic names- my #1 boys name (absolutely non-negotiable that I get to name my first born son this name, it is a DEAL BREAKER) has been very popular for 100 years (lowest it ever dropped was in the 30s).
