The Residents. New muxtape featuring one of the finest bands ever to come from Louisiana (by way of San Francisco). Songs about wooden Indians, sideshow freaks, murderous cowboys, and a gingerbread man that feeds on psychic energy. Yum.
It'll be around for awhile, arse... I'm going to tune into Zack's show now myself! :) (I'd have been listening earlier except I was uploading all this stuff)
I almost included Hello Skinny on the muxtape, but decided to stick with some later stuff. That song is one of my favorites, though.
And yeah, I LOVE that Renaldo & The Loaf video!! Apparently the Residents directed it. Not sure what R&TL thought of it, but I notice they never asked them to make another one. Heh!
Well, the Residents only produced the Renaldo video, which makes sense as they were signed to the Residents' record label. The video itself was directed by Graeme Whifler. I'm fairly sure the lack of follow-up was partially due to the fact that Renaldo's albums only sold in quantities of, y'know, 100. :-)
I personally can't stomach anything by the Residents after 1980, but I'm old-fashioned like that...

They've done some truly beautiful stuff just in the last decade... that's one reason I skewed this muxtape to their later material.
I think the newer stuff gets ignored in favor of the fan favorites from their crazy old days, which we all love, but c'mon, there's twenty-plus more years of music that kinda gets ignored, and a lot of it is fucking genius.
I mean, the Icky Flix tour itself and some of the new versions of old songs they produced... those were better and had incredible subtleties that even the original songs didn't have. (See the "Man's World" video above for an example.)
Then of course there's stuff like God In Three Persons, one of the most mind-fucking albums ever, and a work of modern art that I really don't think has been given its due. Pollex Christi, their last collaboration with N. Senada (who I'm convinced was composer Harry Partch) is fucking hilarious, beautiful, and kinda blows my mind that they pulled it off. A classical music mash-up before mash-ups even existed? WTF?
It doesn't pay to be one of those cool-boy "Oh, I only like their old stuff" fans when you're dealing with the Residents... this is no ordinary band. I saw them last on the Demons Dance Alone tour, and attended with four people who knew nothing about the Residents (because I dragged 'em there) and two other fans. To a person, we were fucking blown away. Humor, emotion, and a fair amount of freakiness poured off that stage, and I'll never forget it. I think "the singing Resident" is about my dad's age, and I hope he can keep this up for as long as possible, because it's going to be remembered as one of the most amazing runs by any modern artist EVAR once he's gone.
