Eli "Paperboy" Reed and the True Loves Rarely do I find out about a good band and get to tell other people about it. This is a good band. Throwback soul-funk-R&B house-party in the grand tradition from a guy who learned to sing from his fathers' Ray Charles records.[More:]"Doin' the Boom Boom" was played on a college station as I was driving in to work the other day. It was irresistible and I listened in to hear who it was. There was no doubt in my mind that it was by a 70s funk master. I wrote down his name and looked him up and wasn't I surprised to find that the band is contemporary, touring, and just about to break big after a really good run at SXSW. And - they're playing in Newburyport at the end of the month! Haven't looked forward to a live show so much in a long time.
They sound like they'll be a hell of a lot of fun live. Excellent find!

One of the British music mags I read put "(Doin' The) Boom Boom" on their give-away CD a month or so ago. A lot of the other neo-soul/R&B on there was kinda dire, but that track stood head and shoulders above the rest. Good catch, Miko.
