My sister did this with my niece and it worked really well. No idea whether it's a new thing or not, but it does really help young children communicate before they've started talking.

The children of two of my friends used a couple of signs to communicate before they were verbal -- mainly water, milk, eat and more. The parents didn't try to go much further than that, but wow, the kid in that video shows just how much more they could have.

My sister used a lot of pointing so that my niece could indicate what she was interested in, where she wanted to go and so on. It worked really well.

i love it. i always want to learn more sign language. i should really brush up on my Spanish. With trying to cobble together Korean too, i don't think i am every really gonna get to French properly.
