I'm watching "Village of the damned" (1960) for the first time - what other classic sci-fi might I have missed out on? Your faves?
From that era: Forbidden Planet 1956. Way ahead of it's time.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers 1956. The cold war as science fiction.

The Fly 1958. "Help meeee!!"

Journey to the Center of the Earth 1959. Great fun adventure story.

The Last Man on Earth 1964. First of many movies based on from I am Legend.

Thanks arse_hat! I'll have to start with The Last Man on Earth seeing as I've just recently watched both Omega Man and I am Legend. :) Weee!

Carnival of Souls. Not really sci-fi, but a classic for sure.

Spider Baby. A great cult film.

I'll second Carnival of Souls, and throw in Six String Samurai - not horror or SF or even an amazing classic, but good cool fun nonetheless.

Second Spider baby, and Buckets of Blood for black and white beatnik hipsters and murder.

Carnival of Souls is AWESOME. Also, Invaders From Mars, a weird, weird cult movie, and The Day The Earth Stood Still, one of the all-time greats.

From around the same time: Bucket of Blood by Roger Corman is a comedy horror b-movie classic

I'd strongly recommend Theatre of Blood starring Vincent Price to anyone. It's surprisingly grisly for it's time but also darkly funny.

I'm also a big fan of White Zombie.

Wow, I'm really mixing decades around here.

Yeah, i kept thinking of Vincent Price too.
The orginial House of Wax is all the houses of wax i need.

I'll also say rush to Carnival of Souls. And I was surprised when I rewatched the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers recently at how well it held up. And watch how many times they drink in that movie!

If you're looking for an entertaining but not really great sci-fi movie, Omega Man is worth it if you're looking for a "Charlton Heston fighting zombies" flick.

One of my fave sc-fi flicks is Silent Running, which is a slow paced but compelling eco-message film set in space with cute robots and a great Bruce Dern performance.

i haven't seen all of Carnival of Souls. We really need a movie night or hijacked theater meet up.
If for some freakish reason you haven't seen Soylent Green, it's a must.

And Freaks just so you are "one of us."

The Incredible Shrinking Man is still a great movie and has one of the greatest endings ever. The special effect hold up pretty well too.

Theatre of Blood is one of the new wave horror classics as is Price's The Abominable Dr. Phibes 1971 with the wonderful Virginia North. The second Phibes movie is not as good.

For shear fun, camp and music I recommend Phantom of the Paradise 1974 a Brian De Palma film he never talks about with Paul Williams, and Jessica Harper, Gerrit Graham, and Archie Hahn. Three actors who rarely get the spot light but who always seem perfect for the job.

It plays with a lot of late 60's early 70's genres with a bit of beach music, bubble gum rock, Gary Glitter, KISS, and Bowie type stuff.
