"One night a woman falls ill and, within a few days, dies. With her, her husband loses everything that had bound him to his middle class way of life. He gives up his job as a senior clerk in a tobacco wholesale company, sells his house and leaves Washington D.C. He could take up his former profession again. Not that of a bookkeeper or an insurance salesman, but of a professional gambler. However the man, aged 43, makes a very different decision. He moves to New York City, finds a room in a small hotel, and begins to write. Dan James Marlowe is on his way to becoming a free-lance writer."[More:]More about Dan J. Marlowe.
That takes up quite a bit more front-page space than I expected. Sorry.

Awesome post dersins, I love this era of mystery writers. He has a fair amount of stuff still in print too.

Damn, I'm 43. There's hope for me yet! Nahhh, I'll just keep being the nondescript knuckledragger that I am.

Great post.

I'm bound to the middle class way of life, ethylene, until the ropes break and I fall to low class, or even all the way down to no class.

Yeah that's what I liked about the article, too; I'm 37-- I've still got 6 years!

Don't forget to acquire a wife, and have her die; this seems to be an important part of the equasion... else how are you ever going to stop being middle class?
